Box Score Berry moved to 12th place on Harvard's all-time
scoring list with 19 points at Providence (Gil Talbot).
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Victoria Lippert
scored 20 points and Brogan Berry added
19 as the Harvard women's basketball team fell 71-60 Friday night
at Providence.
Lippert was 8-of-12 from the floor including a 3-of-5
performance from three-point range. Berry made 7-of-14 and was
4-of-5 at the line, dishing out five assists while playing all 40
minutes. Berry's 19 points moved her to 12th place on
Harvard's career scoring list, where she now stands with 1,116. Christine
Clark turned in 10 points as the Crimson (0-3) combined to
shoot 47.9 percent on the night.
Providence (1-2) was led by Rachel Barnes' 22 points and Symone
Roberts' 14. The Friars took advantage of 22 Harvard turnovers,
scoring 26 points off those turnovers and holding a 38-18 advantage
in the paint.
Scoring was at a premium early in the game as Providence held a
slight 6-5 lead at the first media timeout. Harvard took a 7-6
advantage on Lippert's first bucket and went on top 11-8 on a
jumper by Berry with 12:53 to play. Berry later put the Crimson up
18-17 with a three-pointer, as she began the game a perfect 4-of-4
from the floor with one assist to account for 12 of Harvard's first
18 points.
The teams traded baskets over the final eight minutes of the
half with Lippert twice giving Harvard a lead from behind the arc.
The Friar's closed out the frame on an 8-2 run following Lippert's
second three, however, to take a 33-30 margin into the locker
room.
The Crimson shot 60.0 percent in the first half, connecting on
12-of-20 attempts from the floor and 3-of-5 from three. Lippert led
all scorers with 11 points while Berry netted 10 and dished out
three assists. Both teams struggled with ball security, as
Providence held a 12-9 advantage in turnovers and the teams
combined to score 25 points off the mistakes.
Providence hit on its first two possessions out of the
intermission to extend the run to 12-2 and take a 37-30 lead.
Lippert connected on her third three-pointer to end the stretch and
after Clark's baseline drive, Harvard's deficit was cut to three,
39-36. Missy
Mullins put back her own miss to move the score to 42-40, but
Rachel Barnes' three with 12:09 on the clock began an 18-6 run
which put the Friars in front for good, 60-46.
Harvard pulled to within eight off an Emma Golen layup and
two possessions later the junior made it a six-point game, 66-60,
at the free-throw line. Providence added five points in the final
minute, however, to hold on for the 71-60 win.
The Crimson will open its home schedule Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 7
