Dustin Brode took second in the shot put at Day 2 of the Penn Relays (Harvard Athletic Communications).
PHILADELPHIA – Freshman Dustin Brode's second-place finish in the shot put Friday marked the top performance by a Harvard athlete in the first two days of competition at the 117th Penn Relays. The Crimson will wrap up its stay at the Penn Relays tomorrow with athletes competing in the hammer, the javelin and the men's and women's 4x800 relays.
Brode posted a distance of 16.71 meters (54'10") to take second place in the men's eastern college competition, finishing behind only Rashad Williams of Central Connecticut State. Brode's mark is a personal best in the event and represents the seventh-best mark in program history. Teammate Edward Brucker finished fifth in the competition with a distance of 16.14 (52'11.5"). Brucker also competed in the discus Friday, placing 21st overall with a mark of 46.30 (151'10"). The men's 4x400 relay squad of Jeffrey Homer, Brian Paison, Darcy Wilson and Brian Hill ran a time of 3:24.79 in the lone running event of the day for Harvard.
Shannon Watt kicked off the action for the Crimson at this year's meet, competing in the shot put and discus Thursday afternoon. In the shot, Watt posted a mark of 12.91 (42'4.25"), good for 11th overall and first among Ivy League competitors. Watt's throw of 39.87 (130'9") in the discus was good for 20th in the competition. Alaina Murphy, Thea Lee, Natalia Paine and Meghan Looney finished with a time of 3:51.82 in the women's 4x400, good for sixth, to wrap up Thursday's action for the Crimson.
Harvard will finish the weekend at the Brown Springtime Invitational in Providence, R.I., Sunday, after its final day of action at the Penn Relays.
