CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Bob Scalise, The
Nichols Family Director of Athletics, and Harvard University are
excited to announce the 14th endowed head coach position: The Paul
M. Weissman '52 Director of Harvard Golf.
This is the third Harvard coaching endowment this calendar
year and the 14th overall. The endowed position helps to
ensure the foundation for future success of the Crimson golf
programs.
Paul M. Weissman '52 was a three-time letterwinner on the Harvard
golf team (1950-52) and served as team captain during the 1952
season. During his junior season, Weissman helped the Crimson
finish fifth at the Eastern Intercollegiate Championships and also
served as freshman team captain in 1949.
"Harvard athletics and I are extremely thankful to Paul for making
this endowment possible," Bob Scalise said. "With Paul's
generosity, the golf programs at Harvard will continue to succeed
and thrive for generations to come. We are very grateful for Paul's
generosity and dedication to Harvard golf."
Harvard golf began at Harvard with the team's team in 1896, while
the women's program was started in 1993. The men's squad earned six
national championships between 1898 and 1916, with eight players
winning individual titles in the same period. The women's program
has won three Ivy League titles in the past five years, including
capturing the crown last season, while the men has one Ancient
Eight crown to its credit. The two programs have also combined for
55 All-Ivy League selections.
"Paul has been a consistent and generous supporter of Harvard and
our golf program," said Fred Schernecker '89 who has served as
Director of Golf since 2003. "I was a Weissman Scholar during
my time as an undergraduate at Harvard and our team members have
benefitted from the Weissman International Internship
program. Paul has touched so many individual Harvard lives in
such a positive way with these and the many other programs he has
supported. The endowment allows us to continue to pursue
excellence and our Mission of 'educating tomorrow's leaders' in the
golf program."
Paul M. Weissman '52, who retired from a career on Wall Street,
and his wife, Harriet, have been devoted alumni and friends of
Harvard, having served in various capacities. Paul is currently a
member of the Committee on University Resources (COUR) and an
honorary board member of the Harvard Alumni Association (HAA). This
year Paul also chaired his 60th reunion gift committee, a position
he has held for all of his previous reunions. Prior volunteer
positions include president of the HAA and chair of the Harvard
College Fund, among others.
In addition to Paul's volunteer roles, his generosity has also
benefited many areas of the university. In 2000, the Weissmans
established the University Library's Weissman Preservation Center,
and in 2007 they accompanied this gift by endowing the Paul M. and
Harriet L. Weissman Senior Photograph Conservator in the Harvard
University Library. In addition to their sustained support for the
libraries, Paul and Harriet helped to underwrite the University's
student financial aid program through the Paul M. Weissman Family
Scholarship Program. They also created the Weissman International
Internship Program, which allows over 50 students per year to
travel abroad in the summer to pursue meaningful foreign work
experiences, thus fostering the development of Harvard College
students' understanding of the global community.
