LUZERN, Switzerland–Former Harvard
captain Will Newell '11 qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games
in London by helping the U.S. men's lightweight four win at the
2012 Qualification Regatta Tuesday on the Rotsee.
Newell's boat won the final by 0.14 seconds to edge the
Netherlands. He was joined in the racing shell by three other Ivy
Leaguers: Robin Prendes (Princeton), Nick LaCava (Columbia) and
Anthony Fahden (Dartmouth).
The victory was a part of a 3-for-3 day, as U.S. crews qualified
in the double scull and men's eight as well. Harvard sophomore
Andrew Campbell '14-15 will race in the lightweight men's double
final Wednesday.
The U.S. lightweight four was in third behind The Netherlands
and Serbia crossing the 500-meter mark and moved into second by the
halfway point. Newell and his boatmates took the lead in the
third quarter of the race, and held on to win with a time of
6:01.85. The Netherlands clocked a 6:01.99 to grab the second
qualifying spot, and New Zealand placed third in 6:03.31.
It was the culmination of a regatta full of tight racing for the
lightweight four. The Americans placed second to the Dutch, missing
a direct path to the final, but won their repechage to advance.
