Daniel Smith netted his first collegiate goal Saturday vs.
Princeton (Gil Talbot).
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Thanks to a strong week of play,
highlighted by a comeback, 2-1, victory over Princeton Saturday,
the Harvard men's soccer team yielded its third consecutive
Ivy League weekly award winner with freshman defender Daniel Smith
taking home Rookie of the Week honors. It marks the second straight
Rookie of the Week nod for the Crimson, as Ashi Geberkidane
captured the prize last week.
Smith had a strong week on the Crimson back line, helping
Harvard into solo second place in the Ivy League standings. After a
tough 3-2 defeat at the hands of Boston College Tuesday, Smith and
the Crimson rebounded against Princeton Saturday. After Harvard
knotted the game at 1-1 thanks to a Philip Fleischman goal, Smith
closed the door on the Tigers, putting home a short rebound for the
game-winning tally in the 2-1 final. It marked Smith's first
collegiate goal and he became the 11th different Harvard player to
score this season. Smith is the only freshman on the squad to have
started all 13 games this season, and one of just four players on
the roster to have accomplished that feat.
Another tough Ivy battle looms for the Crimson, as Harvard hosts
Dartmouth Saturday, Nov. 2 at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium. The
game will be live streamed on the Ivy League Digital Network.
