CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Yale University strong safety Cole Champion and Endicott quarterback Drew Frenette have been selected as the Ray Gallant Insurance New England Football Writers' Gridiron Club of Great Boston Gold Helmet Awards for their performances this week.
Champion led a disruptive defensive effort that included a game-high 14 tackles, a pair of interceptions and a fumble recovery as Yale downed No. 18 Cal Poly, 24-10. The Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., native recovered a loose ball at the Yale 46 and then stopped a Cal Poly drive at the Yale six-yard line with his first interception. The sophomore intercepted his second pass of the day at the Cal Poly 45 with 3:24 remaining in the second half to keep the Mustangs to its lowest total in points and yards in the 2013 season. The Bulldogs improved to 3-0.
Frenette paced the Endicott offense to a 52-38 homecoming weekend victory over Maine Maritime. The signal caller connected 24-of-34 pass attempts for 324 yards and five touchdowns. Frenette and the Endicott starting offense scored two touchdowns in the first half. The junior quarterback would find the end zone both in the third and fourth quarters as well, as the Gulls outscored Maine Maritime, 32-0 to secure the win.
