CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard men's basketball team used a second-half surge to pull away from Boston University Monday night for a 70-56 win at Lavietes Pavilion.
Wesley Saunders led Harvard in points, rebounds and assists for a second time this season, turning in 15 points, seven boards and a season-high eight helpers. The senior connected on all three of his 3-point attempts and held BU's (2-6) Cedric Hankerson, who entered the game averaging 19.9 ppg, to just three points on 0-of-6 shooting.
Corbin Miller contributed 13 points and also hit three 3's, while Siyani Chambers added 10 points and seven assists.
The victory improved Harvard to 7-1 on the year, 6-0 at home, and was the team's sixth straight triumph overall.
Harvard led 12-8 at the first media timeout before an 11-2 BU run opened a 19-14 margin. Saunders' first 3-pointer ended the Crimson drought and Zena Edosomwan tied the score at 19-19, with Saunders putting the Crimson back in front at the free throw line, 23-22. Miller hit from NBA distance to give Harvard a 26-23 lead, but the Crimson needed an 8-4 stretch before the break to take a 34-33 lead into the intermission.
Saunders led Harvard with eight points, six assists and three rebounds through the first 20 minutes with Miller and Edosomwan adding six apiece.
The Crimson opened the second half with a 9-2 run to take a 43-35 margin, allowing zero BU field goals and forcing three turnovers through the first 5:20. The Terriers began to heat up and tied the score at 45-45 on consecutive John Papale 3's, but Harvard responded by outscoring BU 12-2 for the night's first double-digit lead, 57-47.
The Crimson's run began as Saunders connected for his third 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down and continued as Chambers found Andre Chatfield flying up the court for an easy basket in transition. Miller kept it rolling with another make from behind-the-arc, and Saunders found Agunwa Okolie under the basket for an emphatic dunk to cap the stretch off.
Chambers accounted for seven of Harvard's final 13 points, scoring five and assisting on a Saunders basket, as the Crimson maintained the double-digit advantage en route to the 70-56 victory.
