CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- This past fall, the
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) held a shoe drive asking
for new and like-new shoes from the Harvard Community.
There were several featured sporting events where students and
community members could win Harvard gear if they brought in a pair
of shoes for the drive. Shoe donation boxes were also set up
by Harvard's recycling services team at all of the houses,
freshman dorms, and athletic facilities to make it easier and more
accessible for people to donate.
The shoe drive was a success with over 200 pairs of shoes being
donated to the YMCA Residential Caritas Community. This
branch serves 895 homeless men, women, and children of the greater
Boston area, many of whom only have the clothes on their
back.
The shoe drive was a fun and easy way for athletes to interact
not only with their fellow students in raising awareness about the
drive, but also have the greater community involved during their
sporting events.
SAAC hopes to continue this giving spirit with the YMCA
Residential Caritas Community at the end of the semester when
Harvard's students can donate their like new goods and clothing
when moving out of their dorms.
Many thanks to everyone who participated in this great venture!
Make sure to look out for SAAC's other community service
events this spring such as the Charity Ball, Charity Date Auction,
and the Bench Press for Breast Cancer fundraiser.
