NEW HAVEN, Conn. – In its first road contest of the Ivy League season, Harvard women's soccer posted a dominant shutout over archrival Yale, 4-0.
Scoring three times in the first 5:11, Harvard (4-6-1, 2-0-0 Ivy) controlled the pace of play and outshot Yale (3-5-2, 0-2-0 Ivy) 21-4, including 11 on target. Margaret Purce netted her first career hat trick, scoring in the second, sixth and 51 minutes. Bailey Gary added a goal in the fourth minute and provided an assist on two of Purce's scores.
In front of net, Lizzie Durack posted her fourth shutout of 2015, making two saves including a stop against a penalty kick.
Just 1:25 into the first half, Gary played a long ball forward to Purce who fired into the upper left corner from 12 yards out. The goal was Harvard's fastest of the season.
Two minutes later Harvard earned a penalty kick after Purce's cross was batted down by the hand of a Bulldog defender. Yale goalie Rachel Ames saved the PK, but Gary followed home the miss with a rebound to put Harvard on top, 2-0.
The relentless Harvard attack continued at 5:11, when Gary found Purce for her second score of the game. Purce beat a Yale defender to the ball and blasted it into the top left corner.
Harvard added an insurance goal in the 51st minute after Haley Washburn played a pass forward to Purce, who beat the goalkeeper outside the 18-yard box and finished smoothly down the middle.
Yale had its best chance to put a tally on the board in the 65th minute after it was awarded a penalty kick, but Durack dove to her left and made the save.
The Crimson looks to push its win streak to three on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at Boston University.
