CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard men's basketball team did its part with a 72-62 win over Brown Saturday night at Lavietes Pavilion and Dartmouth returned the favor, upsetting Yale 59-58 to give the Crimson a share of the Ivy League championship and force a one-game playoff to decide the Ancient Eight's bid to the NCAA tournament.
The playoff game will be held at the Palestra in Philadelphia on Saturday, March 14. Game time has not yet been announced.
By clinching a share of its fifth-straight Ivy title, the Crimson joins Penn (1970-75, 1978-82) as the only program in Ancient Eight history to win at least five consecutive championships.
Siyani Chambers scored a team-high 15 points and dished off four assists, with his two free throws with 11.1 seconds remaining putting him over 1,000 points for his career. Wesley Saunders notched his sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 assists, while senior big men Steve Moundou-Missi (8 pts., 14 rebs.), Kenyatta Smith (12 pts., 3 rebs.) and Jonah Travis (12 pts., 9 rebs.) combined for 32 points and 26 boards.
Harvard (21-7, 11-3 Ivy) began the game 3-of-3 from the field and took a 6-2 lead on a Smith jumper. The Crimson managed just five points over the next 6:13, however, as Cedric Kuakumensah hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points to help put Brown (13-18, 4-10) up 18-11.
Steve Moundou-Missi and Jonah Travis scored on consecutive possessions to end the drought, and after holding Brown to just four points over a 9:22 span Harvard regained the lead thanks to a hook shot from Smith, 23-22. Moundou-Missi corralled an offensive rebound and Agunwa Okolie found Travis for a two-handed slam and a 27-25 edge, but JR Hobbie hit the Bears' fifth 3 of the half just before the buzzer to take a 28-27 lead into the break.
The teams went back and forth after the intermission with Siyani Chambers twice putting Harvard back in front from deep. With the score tied at 36-36, Okolie and Moundou-Missi scored on consecutive possessions for a four-point margin, and Chambers knocked down his third triple to move the score to 45-40.
Saunders found Corbin Miller for an open 3 and on the ensuing possession came away with a steal and dished to Travis for an easy layup in transition, energizing the crowd. Miller hit back-to-back shots, including his second triple, and Harvard extended the run with a pair of Saunders free throws and bucket by Travis to make it a 59-41 game.
Brown pulled to within 65-55 with 4:30 remaining on another Hobbie 3-pointer, but a pair of Travis free throws and a Saunders jumper kept it at a double-digit margin. The Bears made one final attempt at a run and cut the deficit to 69-60 with just 39.3 seconds to play before Chambers iced the game away with a pair at the line.
