Connor Caveney and Matt Silva garnered NEFWA Gold Helmets after dominating performances on the gridiron on Saturday (Athletic Communications).

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sacred Heart defensive lineman Connor Caveney and Framingham State quarterback Matt Silva have been awarded New England Football Writer's Association Gold Helmets after dominating performances on the gridiron on Saturday.

Connor Caveney paced Sacred Heart's defense in a 56-3 stomping of Valparaiso. The Fitchburg, Massachusetts native recorded his first two career interceptions in the opening half, including one for 47-yards, setting the tone for the Pioneer defense as it forced five Crusader turnovers on the day. Caveney wreaked havoc on the Crusader offense all game, registering four tackles, including two stops and contributed on a sack. Sacred Heart held Valparaiso to 273 total yards and cruised towards its second victory of the season.

Matt Silva etched his name into Framingham State's record books, tossing for a school record 510 passing yards and five touchdowns. However, it was not enough as SUNY Cortland held on to hand the Rams a 61-49 loss in an offensive shootout that set Framingham State records in points (110) and yards of total offense (1,071). The Rams faced a 41-28 deficit at the start of the fourth quarter as the Dracut, Massachusetts native caught fire, tossing three touchdown strikes through the air, cutting the Rams deficit to five before the comeback attempt was cut short by a last minute turnover. Silva, who earned the final NEFWA Gold Helmet of the 2014 season, set school single-game records in completions (43), attempts (59) and yards (510) and also rushed for a touchdown.
