No. 15/18 Men's Ice Hockey Shuts Down Princeton, 3-0

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass – First-year goaltender Mitchell Gibson made 31 saves in his first career start to lead No. 15/18 Harvard men's ice hockey (2-0-0, 2-0-0 ECAC Hockey) to a 3-0 shutout won over Princeton (1-1-1, 0-1-0 ECAC Hockey) at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.

First-year Nick Abruzzese and junior Henry Bowlby scored breakaway goals in the first and second periods, junior Jack Badini added a second period goal, and sophomore defenseman Jack Rathbone had three assists to lead the Harvard attack.

Harvard was outshot 31-30 on the night, but relied on Gibson to overcome a slow start before regaining the momentum over the final two periods of play.

It appeared the game would remain scoreless after 20 minutes of play, but in the dying seconds of the first period, Rathbone made a long stretch pass to Abruzzese for a breakaway, and the first-year hit the top corner at 19:55 to make it 1-0 Harvard.

Midway through the second period, on nearly an identical play, Rathbone hit Bowlby with a long stretch pass for another breakaway, and he finished the play to put the Crimson up 2-0 at 13:32.

Minutes later, on a 2-on-1 chance for Badini, the junior forward fired a shot off the near post, but the puck deflected off the back of Princeton goaltender Ryan Ferland (27 saves) and into the net to give Harvard the 3-0 lead.

In the third period, with Ferland out of the net for an extra attacker, the Crimson blocked several shots, and Gibson made three saves in the final minute of play to preserve the shutout win.
