Sailing Extends Win Streak at Hewitt Trophy

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the fourth consecutive weekend, Harvard sailing walked away with a victory to its name, this time posting a commanding win at the Hewitt Trophy, hosted by Bowdoin, Oct. 9-10. The regatta was one of four in which the Crimson competed in this week. The team also placed 10th at the Smith Trophy and 11th at both the Stu Nelson Trophy and Round 1A of the Atlantic Coast Championship.

At the Hewitt, Harvard finished the 14 races with a team total of 87 points, 32 ahead of second-place Roger Williams. The boat of senior Jonas Nelle and junior Carolyn Wang was particularly instrumental in the Crimson's triumph. The duo finished as the top-ranked boat in the A-division with 40 points, including four first-place results. Sophomore Lachlain McGranahan and junior Cassia Lee also impressed, finishing second in the B-division with 47 points and four firsts of their own, two of which came in the regatta's final two races.

The semifinal round of the Coed Atlantic Coast Championship, hosted by Brown, marked the premier event of the weekend, as teams vied for a coveted spot in the finals, Oct. 23-24. With senior skipper Eliot Burnes unable to compete due to illness, the Crimson was forced to make some late shuffles to its lineup, and ultimately ended the regatta just outside the nine qualifying spots. Senior Emma Kaneti and sophomore Marleigh Belsley filled in for Harvard in the B-division, tallying two race wins on their way to placing 10th in the flight. Senior Henry Burnes and junior Chris Wang sailed in the A-division, also placing 10th with a total of 174 points and one race victory. In the end, the team's 341 points across 18 races put them just 12 points behind ninth place Penn, the final team to advance to the finals.

Other notable performances from the weekend came from the pairing of Dylan Ascencios and Alexander Dorofeev, who ranked fourth in the A-division at the Smith Trophy, and from sophomore Marbella Marlo and junior Juliana Ruggieri, who finished first in two races on their way to taking sixth in the A-division at the Stu Nelson Trophy.

Up Next: Sailing will be back on the water for three regattas next weekend, Oct. 16-17, including the finals of the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship, hosted by Harvard. The Crimson will also compete in the Savin Hill Invitational at Boston College and the Captain Hurst Bowl at Dartmouth. The Women's ACC finals can be seen live on ESPN+.
