CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard football team collected three Ivy League Player-of-the-Week awards and entered the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) FCS Coaches' Top 25 Poll at No. 22 on Monday. Quarterback
Jake Smith took home the league's offensive award, while punter
Jon Sot and wide receiver
Kaedyn Odermann captured the Ivy's special teams and rookie honors, respectively.
Â
Smith tossed three touchdown passes and finished 20-of-31 for 229 yards in the Crimson's 38-13 win at No. 24 Holy Cross on Saturday. The senior had TD passes of 41, 17 and 29 yards, and helped the Crimson jump out to a 24-0 lead by halftime.
Â
Sot, meanwhile, booted eight punts for a 42.8 average against the Crusaders. The junior had a long punt of 67 yards, recorded three kicks of 50 or more yards and placed the ball inside the 20 five times. Of those five, one settled at the 2-yard line and another went to the 6.
Â
Lastly, Odermann, a first-year from Gretna, Nebraska, caught three passes for 37 yards at Holy Cross. Early in the second quarter, the wideout fought off a defender and made a two-handed catch in the endzone, despite defensive pass interference. Odermann's 17-yard TD reception gave the Crimson a 14-0 lead on the day and represented his second touchdown grab of 2021.
Â
Harvard, with its win at Holy Cross, finds itself at 3-0 for the first time since 2016, and recorded its first victory over a nationally ranked opponent since 2015. As a result of its performance thus far, the Crimson owns a top-25 ranking for the first time since Nov. 11, 2016.
Â
No. 22 Harvard returns to action on
Saturday when it plays host to Cornell at 1 p.m. ET. The contest will air live on ESPN+ and Bloomberg Radio in Boston (WRCA 1330 AM, 106.1 FM and 92.9 FM-HD-2).
