Box Score CANTON, N.Y. – It was a milestone kind of night for No. 9/9 Harvard women's hockey, as the Crimson picked up the 700th win in program history, toppling St. Lawrence (5-3-2, 2-1-0 ECAC Hockey) by a score of 2-0 at Appleton Arena on Friday.
Harvard (4-1-0, 3-1-0 ECAC Hockey) becomes just the fourth women's team to reach the 700-win mark and the first in ECAC Hockey. The program first gained varsity status in 1978-79.
Captain Becky Dutton stopped all 24 shots she faced, posting her first shutout of the year, while first-year Taze Thompson and junior Anne Bloomer each scored en route to the victory. The Crimson also benefited from a stellar penalty-kill, which erased a total of six St. Lawrence power-play opportunities.
Following more than 18 minutes of scoreless play in the first period, Thompson notched the first goal of her collegiate career, striking on the power play after a string of great passes by the Crimson. Kristin Della Rovere and Becca Gilmore were credited with the assists on the Thompson redirection, which beat the reigning ECAC Hockey Goalie of the Month, Lucy Morgan.
No goals were scored in the second period, as each team's netminder turned away the opposition on several quality chances.
The third period featured much of the same up-and-down pace without any scoring to show for it. That changed when the Saints pulled their goalie with 2:24 remaining in the contest, opening the door for Bloomer to connect on an empty-net goal with just three seconds remaining in the game.
Harvard Highlights:
- Becky Dutton now owns a record of 3-0-0 on the season. The senior has surrendered just two goals in her three starts this year.
