CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard men's heavyweight rowing had three athletes compete for medals with an additional five vying for spots in the A-Final of other competitions on Tuesday night at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Rising senior
Clark Dean and Andrew Reed '14 were part of the U.S. men's four boat that ultimately finished in fifth place in the final with a time of 5:48.85. Team USA, which also included Anders Weis and Michael Grady, clocked in behind Australia (Gold, 5:42.76), Romania (Silver, 5:43.13), Italy (Bronze, 5:43.60) and Great Britain (4
th place, 5:45.78).
Juri-Mikk Udam '17 teamed with Allar Raja, Tonu Endrekson and Kaspar Taimsoo to form Estonia's quadruple scull. The quartet battled their way into the final, claiming a spot with a runner-up performance in the repechage. The group's magic ran out with a medal on the line, placing sixth (5:38.58). The Netherlands (5:32.03), Great Britain (5:33.75) and Australia (5:33.97) finished with gold, silver and bronze, respectively.
In the semifinals of the men's four, Australians Sam Hardy '18 and Josh Hicks '13 completed the competition in fourth place with an effort of 6:19.30, narrowly missing the necessary top-3 finish to collect an A-Final berth. Romania (6:13.51), Denmark (6:14.88) and Spain (6:16.25) went 1-2-3, sending Hardy and Hicks to Wednesday's B-Final at 7:40 p.m. ET.
The last race of the day involving Harvard rowers was the repechage of the men's eight, featuring
Liam Corrigan '19, John Harrity '18 and Alexander Richards '18 of the United States. The trio guided the American boat to a third-place time of 5:23.43, crossing the finish line behind New Zealand (5:22.04) and Great Britain (5:23.32). All three countries advanced to Thursday night's A-Final at 9:25 p.m. ET.
