FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The 2021-22 season began with a promising performance for Harvard men's golf as the team finished in a tie for second place amongst 14 schools at The Doc Gimmler this weekend, Sept. 11-12. Playing Bethpage State Park's Red Course, the Crimson put themselves in contention down the stretch, before ultimately falling one-shot short of the tournament champion, Columbia. Harvard's 54-hole team total of 6-over-par, 846 was equaled by Connecticut.
The sophomore tandem of
Kevin Sze and
Brian Ma, both California natives, were the top individual finishers for the Crimson, tying for third at 2-under-par. Ma and Sze were followed by first-year
Diego Saavedra-Davila at 4-over-par, 214 (T20), sophomore
Adam Xiao at 8-over-par, 218 (T35) and senior
Oliver Cordeiro at 18-over-par, 228 (T69).
It was a strong showing overall for the three Ivy participants in the event. Columbia and Harvard placed first and tied second, respectively, while Yale tied for fourth at 11-over-par, 851.
Harvard Highlights
- Brian Ma and Diego Saavedra-Davila were the team leaders in birdies with 10 apiece.
- Harvard's combined 40 birdies as a team were the second most in the field, behind only Columbia.
- Playing In his first event at Harvard, Kevin Sze matched Yale's Sho Wai Wu for the top par 4 scoring mark in the field with a stroke average of 3.97.
- Saavedra-Davila opened his collegiate career by firing a 3-under-par 67 in round one. It was the low individual score of the tournament for the Crimson.
Tournament Notes:
- Ivy League foe, Columbia won the event with a team total of 5-over-par, 845.
- Villanova sophomore, Peter Weaver took home the tournament's individual honors, shooting a final round 67 to finish at 4-under-par overall.
- The event, hosted by St. John's, was played at Bethpage State Park's Red Course (par 70, 7092 yards).
