Men’s Soccer Hosts No. 15 Penn Saturday Riding Five-Game Unbeaten Streak

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University men's soccer hosts the No. 15 University of Pennsylvania on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1:00 p.m. (ESPN+) at Jordan Field with the Crimson bringing a five-game unbeaten streak into the contest. 

What to Know

  • Over its last five games, Harvard has posted an undefeated 3-0-2 record and has outscored its opponents 9-2. During the stretch, the Crimson has posted three clean sheets and not permitted more than one goal in any game.
  • Harvard checks in at No. 52 in the NCAA RPI as of Oct. 23. The Ivy League features a pair of teams in the top 10 in Cornell (No. 8) and Penn (No. 9) alongside another three teams in the top 100 in Yale (No. 48), Brown (No. 78), and Princeton (No. 82).
  • Junior forward Ale Gutierrez earned Ivy League Player of the Week honors on Oct. 24 after scoring the game-winning goals in both of the Crimson's victories in the prior week. Gutierrez scored game-winning goals in wins over both Yale (2-1) and Holy Cross (5-0) with his game-winner against the Bulldogs coming in the 90th minute. For the week, he totaled three goals and an assist for seven points.
  • Harvard has totaled four student-athletes with double-figure points this season. Thus far in 2022, junior Willem Ebbinge (14 points), junior Ale Gutierrez (13), sophomore Alessandro Arlotti (12 points), and senior Martin Vician (11 points) have all crossed the double-figure threshold. Last season, Vician (19), Ebbinge (14), Arlotti (25), and Cornelius Bencsik (12) all reached double-figure point totals.
  • Junior Willem Ebbinge paces the program in assists (eight) and points (14) on three goals and eight assists. Ebbinge stands first in the conference in assists and fifth in points. He has notched points in 10 of his 13 games played this season. Ebbinge ranks sixth in the NCAA in assists per game (0.62).
  • Junior Ale Gutierrez leads the Crimson in goals (six) and game-winning goals (four), while ranking second with 13 points. He stands sixth in the NCAA in game-winning goals (four). He registered his first career brace vs. Holy Cross and scored the game-winner in the 90th minute vs. Yale.
  • Sophomore Alessandro Arlotti ranks fourth in the Ivy League with six assists on the season and has compiled 12 points on three goals and six assists.
  • For the season, senior Martin Vician ranks second on the team in goals (five) and fourth in points (11). He scored back-to-back braces in games against Northeastern and Quinnipiac.
  • A total of 19 different players have tallied points for Harvard on the season. The Crimson tallied 10 players with points in both its 6-0 win over Fairfield (Sept. 24) and its 5-0 win over Holy Cross (Oct. 18).
  • As a team, Harvard has established advantages in shots (218-159), shots on goal (104-59), and corner kicks (95-62) on the year.
  • In the NCAA rankings, the Crimson stands sixth in assists per game (2.93), 17th in corner kicks per game (6.79), 16th in points per game (7.07), 26th in goals per game (2.07), 20th in shots per game (15.57), seventh in shots on goal per game (7.43), sixth in total assists (41), and 16th in total points (99).
  • Harvard's goalkeepers have posted a 1.21 goals-against average and five shutouts this season. Senior goalie Oskar Nilsson has notched a 1.39 GAA and two clean sheets over 11 games started, and first-year Cullen MacNeil has posted a 0.67 GAA and two shutouts in three games started.
  • Sophomore Ludovico Rollo scored an equalizing goal in the 75th minute, and junior Ale Gutierrez netted the game-winning goal in the 90th minute in Harvard's comeback 2-1 win over Yale on Oct. 22.
  • Junior Ale Gutierrez scored a pair of goals, and senior Nico Garcia-Morillo, sophomore Sam Bjarnason, and first-year Matus Vician each netted a goal as Harvard defeated Holy Cross, 5-0, on Oct. 18 in its non-league finale.
  • Junior Ale Gutierrez scored the game-winning goal, first-year goalkeeper Cullen MacNeil posted his first collegiate shutout, and Harvard beat BU, 1-0, on Oct. 4 in its final road non-league game of the year.
  • The Crimson totaled six goals in a 6-0 win over Fairfield on Sept. 24. Six different Crimson – senior Ale Gutierrez, junior Willem Ebbinge, sophomore Marko Isakovic, junior Nik White, senior Martin Vician, and first-year Matus Vician – netted a goal in the game. The six goals marked Harvard's most in a game since a 6-0 win over Penn on Nov. 14, 2015. A total of 10 Harvard players registered points in the contest.
  • First-year Matus Vician earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors on Sept. 26 after posting four points on a goal and two assists in the Crimson's 6-0 victory over Fairfield. The points marked the first of Vician's collegiate career.
  • Harvard earned a 3-1 win over Quinnipiac on Sept. 17 behind senior Martin Vician's second straight brace alongside a goal from senior Ale Gutierrez.
  • Harvard pulled out a dramatic victory against Bryant as senior Nico Garcia-Morillo scored the game-winning goal with 2.5 seconds remaining to lift the Crimson to a 2-1 victory over the Bulldogs at Jordan Field on Sept. 6.
  • Harvard opened its 2022 campaign with a 2-0 victory over Central Connecticut State in its home opener on Sept. 3. Sophomore Alessandro Arlotti and junior Willem Ebbinge provided the goals while senior goalkeeper Oskar Nilsson recorded the shutout.
  • Harvard leads the all-time series with Penn, 39-37-5.
  • Penn checks in at No. 15 in the United Soccer Coaches poll and at No. 9 in the NCAA RPI. The Quakers bring a 10-1-2 overall record and 4-0-0 Ivy League mark into the weekend. In Ivy play, Penn has topped Yale (2-1), Dartmouth (2-0), then No. 15 Cornell (3-2), and Brown (1-0).
