No. 18 Men’s Swimming and Diving Sweeps Both Relays on Day One of Ivies

PRINCETON, N.J. – No. 18 Harvard University men's swimming and diving took first place in both the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay to sweep the opening two events on day one of the 2022 Ivy League Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool on Wednesday night.
 
The Crimson tallied NCAA A cut times and set pool records in both events, while adding school and meet records in the 200 medley relay. Harvard stands in first place in the team standings with a score of 128 ahead of second-place Princeton (110), third-place Yale (106), and the five other Ivy schools.
 
The quartet of senior Dean Farris, junior Jared Simpson, junior Umitcan Gures, and senior Raphael Marcoux set school, meet, and pool records with an NCAA A cut time of 1:24.06 in the 200 medley relay. The group of first-year Ben Littlejohn, sophomore Marcus Holmquist, senior Mahlon Reihman, and Farris registered a pool record with an NCAA A cut time of 6:16.19 in the 800 free relay.

Harvard Highlights

  • Harvard won the 200-yard medley relay with an NCAA A cut time of 1:24.06 as the quartet of senior Dean Farris, junior Jared Simpson, junior Umitcan Gures, and senior Raphael Marcoux set school, meet, and pool records with the time.
  • The Crimson won the 200 medley relay for the 13th time in school history and for the third time (2018, 2019) in the last four seasons. Farris won the event for the third time (2018, 2019) while Gures and Marcoux took the event for the second time (2019).
  • The Crimson captured the 800-yard freestyle relay with an NCAA A cut time of 6:16.19 behind the group of first-year Ben Littlejohn, sophomore Marcus Holmquist, senior Mahlon Reihman, and senior Dean Farris setting a pool record.
  • Harvard claimed the event title for the 24th time in program history and for the fourth straight season (2018, 2019, 2020). Reihman won the event for the fourth time, Farris captured the event for the third time (2018, 2019), and Holmquist won it for the second time (2020).
  • Senior Jake Johnson swam a time trial in the 200-yard butterfly, setting a new school record with an NCAA B cut time of 1:42.42. He topped the previous school record of 1:42.46.

Next Up

Harvard continues competition at the Ivy League Championships tomorrow – Thursday, Feb. 24 – with prelims at 11:00 a.m. and finals at 6:00 p.m. The day's events include the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 1-meter diving, and 200 free relay.
