Men's Hoops Set for Mid-Week Home Match-Up vs. Yale

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Harvard will look to avenge its loss from Saturday at Yale when the Bulldogs visit Lavietes Pavilion on Wednesday night. The contest is the make-up from Jan. 9, after Yale had COVID-19 concerns within its program.

What to Know

- The Crimson is coming off a back-to-back road split at Brown and Yale last weekend. Harvard snapped a four-game series losing streak to the Bears on Friday, before having its eight-game regular-season winning streak vs. the Bulldogs snapped.

- Harvard nearly pulled off the comeback at Yale, falling at John J. Lee Amphitheater, 58-55. The Crimson trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half before Noah Kirkwood brought it within striking distance in the second half by being responsible for 17 consecutive points during one stretch (15 points, 1 assist). Harvard, however, got to within one point with 5:02 left, but could not get over the hump. A Louis Lesmond three-point attempt just past midcourt, which would have tied the game had it gone, was off the mark as time expired.

- Kirkwood finished with a game-high 21 points against Yale, with 19 coming in the second half. The senior also enjoyed game highs in assists (3) and steals (3), while sharing team-high honors with Mason Forbes as both pulled down seven rebounds.

- Kirkwood has scored in double figures in all 19 games this season and has gone for at least 20 points six times, including in four of his last six outings (21.5 ppg).

- Kirkwood, who missed his junior season due to the pandemic, is on the verge of becoming the 37th member of Harvard's 1,000-point club. The senior comes into the home game vs. Yale with 998 career points in just 76 career games (13.1 ppg). Steve Moundou-Missi '15 is No. 36 on the list with 1,010 points. If Kirkwood scores his season average (17.8 ppg), he could surpass Moundou-Missi and Arne Duncan '87 (No. 35; 1,012), and be crowding Christian Webster '13 (No. 34; 1,016).

- Junior Luka Sakota had a solid two-game swing last week, averaging 15.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals. The guard enters the mid-week game vs. Yale having made 11 of his last 25 attempts from beyond the three-point arc (.444).

- Mason Forbes started both games last week and set career highs in minutes played twice. In the game at Brown, he played 28 minutes and then followed that with 30 at Yale. The senior averaged 10.0 points on 8-for-12 shooting (.667) and 5.5 rebounds. His 20 points and 11 rebounds over two games marked his most in any two-outing stretch of his 53-game career (the 11 boards is tied for his most, originally accomplished on Feb. 21-22, 2020, vs. Princeton and Penn).

- Harvard has been a resilient group over the last few seasons, posting a 17-4 record in the game following its last 21 defeats. Two of those four losses, however, have come this season as the Crimson is 5-2 in responding to losses.

- Harvard comes into its rivalry matchup with the Bulldogs having won eight of the last nine regular-season meetings. In games played at Lavietes Pavilion, the Crimson has been victorious four consecutive times, a streak that dates to the 2016-17 campaign.

- Harvard and Yale are playing each other in consecutive outings for the first time since March 2 and March 5, 1963. The Crimson closed the 1962-63 season with the Bulldogs, falling by four points each time (56-52 at Yale; 80-76 at Harvard).

- After playing five road contests in the first half of Ivy League play, the game vs. Yale represents a shift as the Crimson will finish the campaign with five of seven at home. This season, Harvard is 7-3 at Lavietes Pavilion.

Tommy Amaker, The Thomas G. Stemberg '71 Family Endowed Coach for Harvard Men's Basketball, is in his 15th season at Harvard. He is the winningest coach in Crimson history with 262 victories and has led the program to seven Ivy League titles and eight postseason appearances.
