Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In front of an electric crowd on senior day, the No. 17 Harvard men's lacrosse team (8-3, 3-2 Ivy League) upset No. 3 Princeton (9-3, 3-2 Ivy League), 19-16, this afternoon at Jordan Field. With the win, the Crimson improves to 8-3 overall, 3-2 in the Ivy League and moves into a five-way tie for first place in the conference standings.
Harvard's first-years continue to produce this season, as
Miles Botkiss led the way with four goals. First-years
Sam King and
Andrew Perry, along with senior
Austin Madronic, each posted hat tricks, while junior
Hayden Cheek and first-year
Owen Gaffney recorded two goals apiece. Three Crimson players notched a team-best three groundballs, including
Collin Bergstrom,
Steven Cuccurullo and
Tommy Martinson. In net,
Kyle Mullin registered 18 saves and a .529 save percentage.
The teams traded the first six goals to start the game. Gaffney got the Crimson on the board first, followed by goals from Madronic and Perry for a 3-2 Harvard lead. Princeton answered with a 3-0 run to build a 5-3 advantage. Harvard added one more at the end of the quarter. After a big save by Mullin, King netted one at the buzzer to make it a 5-4 game in favor of the Tigers to end the first quarter.
Princeton came out of the gates in quarter two with four-straight goals. The Crimson stopped the Tigers' run with two-straight goals from Botkiss and
Bryn Evans. Harvard and Princeton exchanged the next two goals, with Botkiss picking up his second of the day. The Tigers went into halftime with a 10-7 lead.
After five minutes of scoreless action to start quarter three, Cheek fired in a rocket to cut the Crimson's deficit to two at 10-8. Harvard and Princeton traded the next four, including a hat trick from Botkiss and Perry's second of the day, while the Tigers held onto a two-goal lead. Gaffney registered his second goal at the end of the quarter to bring Harvard within one at 12-11 heading into the final frame.
A goal from Princeton began the fourth quarter, before Harvard scored two-straight from Cheek and Botkiss to tie the game at 13-13. King tied it once more midway through the quarter, before Perry gave the Crimson a 15-14 edge. After the Tigers knotted the score again, Madronic posted back-to-back goals to build a two-goal lead for the Crimson. Despite one more from Princeton, Harvard scored two-straight from King and
Lucas Hilsenrath to seal the upset victory at 19-16.
