Men's Heavyweight Rowing Set to Compete Against Northeastern

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard Men's Heavyweight Rowing team will look to continue its strong start to the 2022 season this Saturday when it returns to the Charles River to race against Northeastern on the Charles River. The two sides will compete for the Charlie Smith Cup in the final race before the Eastern Sprints Regatta on May 15.
 
Harvard will look to extend it's perfect dual record with and capture its 22nd consecutive Smith Cup with a win. The cross-town rivals have been racing against each other since the 1967 season with the Crimson owning a commanding 37-4 lead in the all-time series.
 
The teams can expect overcast skies with temperatures as high as 53 degrees. Wind speeds are expected to be as fast as 10 miles per hour.

WHAT TO KNOW
  • Harvard Men's Heavyweight Rowing defeated both Penn and Navy this past weekend to obtain the Adams Cup
  • The Crimson is 37-3 all time against the Huskies in Smith Cup races and has not lost since the 1998 season (22-straight races)
  • The race, that took place on the Charles River, ended in 7.0 and 13.3 second wins for Harvard over the Midshipmen and Quakers, respectively
  • The Crimson is now 5-0 in dual races this season and is ranked second in the country by the EARC HW Men coaches
  • The third and fourth varsity crews also improved their undefeated records and are now ranked second and third in the nation, respectively
  • The second varsity eight boat posted a win int eh race this past weekend and is now ranked fourth in the country
  • Harvard ends its regular season this weekend against the Huskies before breaking for finals and then returning to the water for Eastern Sprints (May 15), IRA Nationals (Jun. 3-5) and the Harvard-Yale Regatta (Jun. 11)
 
AT THE HELM
The Bolles-Parker Head Coach for Harvard Men's Heavyweight Crew, Charley Butt, enters his ninth season as the leader of the Harvard Heavyweight Rowing team and his 37th season with the Harvard rowing program in 2021-22, having previously served as the Friends of Harvard Lightweight Rowing Coach for Men's Lightweight Crew for 28 years. In his time with the Heavyweights, Butt has compiled a record of 45-7 in the Spring and two top-three finishes at the IRA National Championships since taking over as the leader of the program.

The Harvard Heavies will have two weeks to train and prepare for the Eastern Sprints Regatta in Worcester, Mass on Sunday, May 15.
