Sailing Finishes 10th at ICSA Open Dinghy National Championship

NEW ORLEANS – Harvard University sailing finished in 10th place at the 2022 Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Open Dinghy National Championship competing for the Henry A. Morrs Memorial Trophy over four days from Thursday to Sunday out of Southern Yacht Club on Lake Pontchartrain.
 
Taking part in the second of three consecutive national championship events hosted by Tulane with support from Community Sailing New Orleans, the Crimson – ranked No. 4 in the Sail1Design Coed Poll – posted its second straight top-10 finish during its time in New Orleans as the program made its first appearance at Open Dinghy Nationals since 2015.
 
Harvard's sailors competing as skippers included sophomore Dylan Ascencios, senior Henry Burnes, and senior Emma Kaneti in the A Division alongside sophomore Lachlain McGranahan in the B Division. The team's student-athletes competing as crew members included first-year Alexandra Dorofeev, junior Chris Wang, and sophomore Marbella Marlo in the A Division alongside Marbello, sophomore Pomaika'i Ogata, and Wang in the B Division.
 
In the semifinals, junior Tyler Masuyama and sophomore Marleigh Belsley also made appearances for the Crimson.
 
Taking part in the Open Eastern Semifinal on Thursday and Friday, Harvard came in fifth place with a total score of 190, including marks of 121 and 69 from the A and B divisions respectively. The Crimson's B division boat tallied eight top-five finishes including wins in races 2, 4, and 8. Harvard's B division boat came in second place in its division.
 
The Crimson's top-nine finish in the semifinal allowed the team to advance to the finals on Saturday and Sunday.
 
In the finals, Harvard came in 10th place out the 18 teams to reach that round with a total score of 324, including marks of 210 and 114 from the A and B divisions respectively. The Crimson's B Division boat tallied seven top-five finishes, including a win in race 4 and second-place finishes in races 3, 7, 9, and 12. Harvard registered the top finish in the B division with its 114 points.
 
Harvard recorded its second top-10 finish during its time in New Orleans after placing seventh in the ICSA Team Race National Championship from May 16-18.
