Sailing Opens Fall Competition with Six Regattas

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard sailing will begin its 2022-23 campaign with a total of six regattas this weekend.  The Harry Anderson Trophy, hosted by Yale, the Toni Deutsch trophy, hosted by MIT, and the Pine Trophy, hosted by the Coast Guard Academy will take place over both September 10th and the 11th.  The three other regattas, Tufts invitational, Boston Invitational, and Harvard Invitational will all occur solely on Saturday, September 10th in the Boston area.  The Crimson will host both the Harvard and Boston Invitational. 
 
What to know:
  • Last season, Harvard sailing returned to the ICSA Team Race National Championship for the first time since 2009 and the ICSA Coed Dinghy Championship for the first time since 2015. 
  • The Crimson capped off a successful 2021-22 season last year with a seventh place finish at the ICSA Team Race National Championship, a 10th place finish at the ICSA Open Dinghy National Championship, and a fourth place finish at the ICSA Women's Dinghy Championship.
  • The team is returning two of its three ICSA All-America honorees.  Juniors Sarah Burn and Lachlain McGranahan both earned All-America Skipper Honorable Mentions.
  • The Crimson are welcoming a decorated class this year including Justin and Mitchell Callahan of Miami, Florida and Kennedy Leehealey of Newport Coast, California.
 
At the helm:
Michael O'Connor is entering his 26th season as the head coach for the Harvard sailing program.  Under O'Connor, the Crimson have won national team race championships in both 2002 and 2003.  Additionally, they won the national coed championship and women's national title in 2003 and 2005, respectively.  Last year, O'Connor led his team back to the ICSA Team Race National Championship and the ICSA Coed Dinghy Championship.
