No. 14 Field Hockey Hosts Columbia in Ivy Opener on Friday, Then BU in Title IX Game on Sunday

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The 14th-ranked Harvard field hockey team (4-2, 0-0 Ivy) hosts two games at Berylson Field this weekend, kicking off Ivy League play against Columbia (2-3, 0-0 Ivy) on Friday (Sept. 23) at 4 p.m. before hosting Boston University (3-5) on Sunday (Sept. 25) at 1 p.m. Sunday's contest will be the program's Title IX Celebration Game, with a postgame clinic. Both games will air on ESPN+.

WHAT TO KNOW

  • On Tuesday night, in a tough defensive effort, Harvard held Northeastern without a shot for nearly the entire game, as the Crimson won its third straight game with a 2-0 victory at Dedham Field. Relying on second half goals by first-year Bronte-May Brough and Lucy Leel, the Crimson pulled away and earned its fourth straight win in the series against the Huskies.
  • In a stretch of 28 games dating back to the end of the 2019 season, Harvard has not allowed more than two goals in a game. Harvard is 24-4 in that span, recording 13 shutouts.
  • Harvard has recorded a 20-1 record in Ivy games dating back to the start of the 2018 season, a span that includes Ivy League titles in 2018 and 2021.
  • Harvard is 25-3 at Berylson Field since the start of the 2018 season.
  • Harvard leads the all-time series against Columbia, 18-6, winning the last eight meetings between the two teams, a streak that began in 2013. Last year on Sept. 24, 2021, current senior captain Kiley Allen recorded a career high four points (goal, two assists) to help Harvard earn a 4-1 win in New York in its Ivy opener.
  • Boston University holds an 18-16-1 edge in the all-time series against Harvard, but the Crimson has won the last five meetings between the two squads dating back to 2016. In a tough defensive struggle last season (Oct. 18, 2021), Hannah Pearce's second quarter penalty stroke goal proved to be the different in a 1-0 win for Harvard.
  • Seniors Kiley Allen, Olivia Hoover, and Ellie Shahbo will captain the Crimson in 2022. All three captains were first-years in 2018, and have compiled a record of 51-10 in three-plus seasons, including a 20-1 record in Ivy games, and a 25-3 mark in home contests.
  • NFHCA All-Americans Ellie Shahbo (second team) and Emily Guckian (third team) return for Harvard. Shahbo had an incredible season in net for Harvard in 2021, leading the nation in virtually every statistical goalkeeping category. A First Team All-Ivy Honoree, Shahbo had the nation's top goals-against average (0.44) and save percentage (.860) and added 10 shutouts. She finished the year with a record of 15-2. Guckian was one of Harvard's top two-way players, recording a goal and six assists and helping Harvard's defense become one of the top units in the nation. A native of Waybridge, England, Guckian was a NFHCA First Team All-Northeast Region selection and Second Team All-Ivy honoree.
  • Harvard is coming off its seventh appearance at the NCAA Tournament and sixth Ivy League title after finishing the 2021 season at 17-2 (7-0 Ivy).
  • Returning to play in 2021 after a missed season due to the pandemic, Harvard made the NCAA Semifinals for the first time in program history, matching a program record for wins on the year. Harvard also beat its highest ranked opponent ever, defeating No. 2 Michigan in the NCAA Quarterfinals.

UP NEXT

Harvard will play two road contests in the Philadelphia area, continuing Ivy League play on Sept. 30 at Penn before taking on St. Joseph's on Oct. 2.
