Read more about senior pitcher Lindsay Poulos' Summer working at a youth homeless shelter:
Hello!!! My name is Lindsay and I am a senior from Granite Bay California. I am concentrating in Psychology with a secondary in Sociology. This summer I was on campus working at Y2Y, a youth homeless shelter located in Harvard Square at 1st Church Street. This youth shelter is student-run so I was one of ten student directors working shifts and logistics to run the shelter for 20 guests (we also had many amazing volunteers that helped during shifts). I was the finance and fundraising director this summer, which taught me a lot of practical and logistical skills. However, I learned the most during my shifts in the shelter. From my overnight shifts to case management shifts, I was able to learn from and help provide a safe space for our guests.
Before this experience I had no idea there are so many different pathways into homelessness for young adults. Every individual I was able to talk with and get to know had their own unique circumstances and background that lead them to Y2Y. The amazing staff at Y2Y made it a priority that our space was psychologically safe for every guest. This allowed our guests to decompress and get a little relief from the world. I was very proud to know from guest feedback that we accomplished our goal. At the end of the summer, I felt very grateful for the opportunity and encouraged that programs like Y2Y are doing great work. I also felt sad and disappointed that when our doors closed some of our guests went straight back to unsafe living conditions. In the future, I hope to see and be a part of finding pathways out of homelessness.
