Men's Volleyball Tripped Up by No. 6 Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. – Harvard men's volleyball dropped its first match of the season tonight against No. 6 Ball State on the road, losings three sets to nothing. The Crimson got excellent efforts from Ethan Smith and Zach Berty, who each contributed seven kills on the attack and shared the team lead with eight points each.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cardinals took an early advantage in the first set after a handful of Harvard errors.
  • Harvard got on track with kills from Smith and Berty midway through the first set.
  • A Kade McGovern kill followed by a Ball St. serive ace got the Cardinal lead down to five.
  • Despite a late rally from Harvard, the Cardinals took the first set, 25-16.
 
  • The Crimson battled at the start of the second set, not giving Ball State any room and kept the game tied up until the score was 7-7.
  • Trevor Schultz had back-to-back kills early in the set to keep Harvard in the mix.
  • Ball State notched four straight points to take a 14-9 lead and take control midway through the second set.
  • Berty would go on to record three more points in the set, but Harvard would eventually fall, 25-18.
 
  • After keeping the score close early on thanks to kills by Ryan Hong and Owen Fanning, Ball State would go on another four-point run to take a 10-4 lead in the third set.
  • Ethan Smith kept Harvard within striking distance with a huge kill followed by a block, cutting the deficit to five.
  • Another series of Ball State runs would result in a 25-15 third set loss.
 

HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS

  • Ethan Smith and Zach Berty each led the team offensively with seven kills and eight points each. Trevor Schultz also contributed with seven points.
  • Smith also posted a team-best .700 hitting percentage.
  • James Bardin assisted on 24 of the Crimson's 48 points.
  • Will Sorenson and Trevor Schultz each had a service ace for Harvard.
  • Logan Shephard paced the defense with seven digs.

UP NEXT

The Crimson will have another chance to leave Indiana with a win when it takes on Purdue Fort-Wayne tomorrow afternoon. The match is set for 5:00 PM in Indiana and will be streamed live on Youtube.com.
