CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard men's volleyball team earned a hard-fought victory in its home opener, defeating North Greenville, 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-23). With the decision, the Crimson moved to 3-2 on the season, while the Crusaders, a team that reached the second round of the 2022 NCAA tournament, dropped to 3-1.
How It Happened
- The first set was a back-and-forth affair, with each team going on mini runs throughout the early portion of the frame. Harvard found itself trailing, 17-15, before it rattled off five straight points. NGU, however, would not go down without a fight and pulled to within 22-21. Consecutive kills by Trevor Schultz and Kade McGovern thwarted the threat en route to an early 1-0 cushion.
- The Crimson maintained its momentum as the match moved to the second set, quickly going ahead, 6-2. Harvard's lead would grow to 9-4 and it wasn't until the visitors trailed, 13-10, before they grabbed control with a 5-0 run. The hosts, however, did not panic and stayed with it, tying the set at 21 with three consecutive points. Despite facing a 24-23 hole, Harvard recorded three straight points to take a 2-0 lead.
- In the final frame, the Crimson wasted little time, jumping out to a 4-1 lead. Every time NGU made a run, Harvard would answer. The Crusaders got to within one point three times and the Crimson kept them at arm's length. Then with Harvard on the verge of clinching, NGU closed its gap to 23-22 only to have Owen Fanning brush the Crusaders aside. North Greenville made one last attempt, making it 24-23 Harvard, but Ethan Smith finished the contest with his fifth kill of the night.
