Men’s Basketball Puts Four in Double Figures, Tops Columbia in New York, 83-65

NEW YORK – First-year forward Chisom Okpara led four Crimson in double figures with 16 points as Harvard University men's basketball beat Columbia University, 84-65, on Friday night at Levien Gymnasium.
 
Opening its final Ivy League back-to-back weekend of the regular season and beginning a stretch of three of four games on the road to end the year, the Crimson (13-12, 4-7 Ivy) led 46-38 at halftime, maintained a double-digit advantage for the final 17:46, and gained a lead as large as 21 points on its way to its second victory over the Lions (6-20, 1-10 Ivy) on the year.
 
Okpara scored his 16 points on 7-of-12 field goals and added six rebounds. Senior guard/forward Chris Ledlum (15 points, nine rebounds, three assists, three blocks), junior forward Justice Ajogbor (14 points, five rebounds), and senior guard Idan Tretout (13 points, seven rebounds, three assists) all joined Okpara in double figures.

Harvard Highlights

  • First-year forward Chisom Okpara scored a team-high 16 points on 7-of-12 field goals, while grabbing six rebounds. He scored in double figures for the eighth time this season and led the Crimson in scoring for the second time.
  • Senior guard/forward Chris Ledlum tallied 15 points, a team-high nine rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and two steals. He scored in double figures for the 23rd time in 25 games this season and led the Crimson in rebounding for the 19th time on the year.
  • Junior forward Justice Ajogbor matched his career high with 14 points, while posting five rebounds and two blocks. He set a new career high with six field goals made (6-of-9) and scored in double figures for the fifth time this season.
  • Senior guard Idan Tretout registered 13 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, while making 4-of-8 field goals and 4-of-4 free throws. He scored in duble figures for the 11th time this season and for the eighth time in his last nine games.
  • Sophomore guard Evan Nelson contributed eight points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals. He led the Crimson in assists for the 15th time this season.
  • Junior guard Sam Silverstein added five points, seven rebounds, and two assists, senior guard Luka Sakota chipped in five points and seven boards, and first-year guard Chandler Piggé scored four points with two assists.
  • Harvard held advantages in rebounds (52-26), points in the paint (54-32), and second-chance points (17-4). The Crimson corralled over 50 rebounds in a game for the third time this season and did so in both games against Columbia.
 

How It Happened

  • In the early stages of the game, Harvard used a 14-5 run to turn a 12-9 deficit into a 23-17 advantage with 12:17 left in the first half. Okpara and Sakota started the streak with back-to-back 3-pointers before each adding buckets later in the burst.
  • A dunk from Ajogbor put Harvard up 25-19 before the Lions pulled within 28-26 with 9:23 to go until the break.
  • Harvard used a 12-5 response to build a 40-31 advantage with 5:53 until the intermission. Ledlum scored six points during the streak while Ajogbor closed the run with consecutive layups.
  • The Crimson brought a 46-38 lead into the locker room behind a pair of field goals from Okpara and a driving layup from Tretout.
  • After Columbia scored the second half's opening basket, the Crimson rattled off nine straight points to move ahead 55-40 with 16:16 remaining. Nelson and Ajogbor netted five and four points respectively on the run, including a trey from Nelson. A dunk from Ajogbor kept the lead at 57-42.
  • Following a stretch where Columbia cut the margin to 59-49, back-to-back layups from Piggé and Okpara gave the Crimson back a 64-49 edge with 11:20 to go. A layup and dunk from Ledlum extended the advantage to 68-51 with 7:57 to play.
  • Harvard took a 20-point lead at 80-60 with 3:31 remaining following a dunk from Ajogbor and a layup from Piggé. The Crimson took its largest lead at 83-62 following a 3-pointer from sophomore guard Tyler Simon.
