Men’s Tennis Set to Compete in Ed Collins Spring Classic

No. 7 Harvard Men’s Tennis will compete at the Ed Collins Spring Classic hosted by San Diego and San Diego State on Friday, March 17 through Sunday, March 19.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 7 Harvard Men's Tennis (8-3) will close out their spring break trip to California by competing in the Ed Collins Spring Classic hosted on the campuses of University of San Diego and San Diego State University.  The star-studded event includes seven teams ranked inside the ITA Division I Team Rankings top-75 and will run from March 17 through March 19.

In the opening round, the Crimson will face San Diego State (1-6) in the Aztec Tennis Center, a team they dominated, 4-0, just three days prior.  With a win, the Crimson would move on to face the winner of No. 35 Tulane versus No. 36 VCU on Saturday, March 18.

What to Know

  • The Crimson opened play in California on Monday, defeating both San Diego State, 4-0, and UC San Diego, 4-2, to improve to 8-3.
  • On Monday, Harris Walker, Daniel Milavsky, and Valdemar Pape all went 2-0 in singles play.  The duo of Walker and Milavsky also teamed up for the first time this season and dominated doubles play, winning both their matches with ease.
  • First-year, Pape is looking strong in his first collegiate spring season.  Despite dropping his first two matches, Pape has found his footing and won seven straight singles matches at various spots on the ladder.  Most recently, Pape picked up a win in his first appearance at the No. 3 position.
  • Senior co-captain, Walker has been dominant in his final campaign with the Crimson.  Coming off a strong fall season, Walker has carried the momentum into the spring, currently sitting with a singles record of 7-2 playing primarily at the No. 1 position.
  • Against UC San Diego, Ronan Jachuck and Steven Sun picked up their ninth doubles win of the spring season.  The duo has looked strong, leading the team in doubles wins by seven.
  • In the most recent ITA Division I Men's Collegiate Tennis Team Rankings, Harvard moved back into the single digits after recently sitting at No. 10, earning the No. 7 spot.
  • Last week, the Crimson were also represented in the updated singles rankings with Henry von der Schulenburg sitting at No. 11 and Harris Walker at No. 27.
For the Foes
  • Following their loss to the Crimson on Monday, the Aztec now sit at 1-6 for the spring season.  Their one win came against San Francisco earlier in the season.
  • Harvard holds a 14-5 edge in the all-time series over San Diego State and has won the last eight meetings.
  • Along with the Crimson and the Aztec, six other teams are competing at the Ed Collins Spring Classic.  The teams include No. 25 Memphis, No. 34 San Diego, No. 35 Tulane, No. 36 VCU, No. 51 Princeton, and No. 70 Utah.
Next Up
The Crimson next opponent will be dependent on the outcome of their match and the outcome of the Tulane versus VCU matchup.  Harvard will face either Tulane or VCU on Saturday, March 18.
