Harvard Softball Never Trails Through 2 Games at Penn to Start Ivy Play

Philadelphia, PA. - The Harvard softball team (9-7-1, 2-0 Ivy) never trailed through two games as they started Ivy League play with two wins at Penn (0-18, 0-2 Ivy) in a Saturday doubleheader, winning 6-0 and 9-1. 

GAME 1 | Harvard 6, Pennsylvania 0

How it Happened

The Crimson took the lead for good in the first, scoring for the first time in the inning. After grabbing a 3-0 lead in the top half of the first they didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game, adding runs in the fourth and fifth innings on the way to a 6-0 victory.

Game Highlights

• Junior Anna Reed was dealing on Saturday, throwing a three-hit shutout to lead the Harvard Crimson past the Pennsylvania Quakers. Reed went the distance for Harvard, giving up three hits, walking two and striking out two.
• Senior Trina Hoang led the way offensively for the Crimson, going 3-for-3 in the ballgame with an RBI. Sophomore Savannah Fitzpatrick put together a standout performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. Junior Madi Mays also chipped in, going 1-for-4 for Harvard with two RBI.
• Harvard's highest scoring inning was the first, when it pushed three runs across.
• The Crimson out-hit the Quakers at a 10-3 clip.
• Junior Lauren Bobowski stole two bases in Saturday's game.
• Harvard went 5-for-13 (.385) with runners in scoring position.
• The Crimson drew four walks from Pennsylvania pitching.

GAME 2 | Harvard 9, Pennsylvania 1

How it Happened

Once again, the Crimson took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 9-1 victory over the Pennsylvania Quakers on Saturday. The Crimson got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Harvard put up a three spot, the big hit coming by way of a run-scoring double off the bat of first-year Finley Payne.

The Crimson then lost some of their lead, expanding on their advantage in the fourth inning after the Quakers cut it to 3-1. which brought the Crimson lead to 6-1.

Harvard held Pennsylvania without a run before expanding their lead to 8-1 the following inning. The Crimson scored twice, with one run coming across on junior Kendall Jean's single.

Harvard kept the Quakers scoreless before their offense got in gear the next inning. The Crimson scored once on an RBI single off the bat of senior Teagan Shaw, bringing the score to 9-1 in favor of Harvard. The score remained 9-1 for the rest of the game, as the Crimson coasted to the win.

Game Highlights 

• Sophomore Katie Arrambide got the win for Harvard. The right-hander went five innings, giving up one run on three hits, allowing no walks and striking out five.
• Senior Megan Welsh led the way offensively for the Crimson, going 3-for-4 in the ballgame with a double and an RBI.  Payne furnished a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Fitzpatrick also chipped in, going 2-for-4 for Harvard with an RBI.
• Arrambide struck out five Quakers hitters.
• Four Crimson players had multiple hits in the ballgame.
• The Crimson out-hit the Quakers at a 14-4 clip.
• Harvard went 9-for-20 (.450) with runners in scoring position.

Up Next

Harvard will play the third and final game at Penn on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. and look to start their Ivy season 3-0. The game will stream on ESPN+.
