Men's Heavyweight Rowing

Men's Heavyweight Rowing Falls to Princeton in Compton Cup Race

PRINCETON, N.J. - The men's heavyweight went undefeated in four out of the five events but fell to Princeton in the Varsity 8 race. Princeton wins the Compton Cup title, and Crimson lose their winning streak.
  • On Lake Carnegie this morning, both teams lucked out with great racing conditions, with temperatures in the 60s and very flat water.
  • The first race of the day was the Fifth Varsity 8 race at 9 a.m. Right off the start, the Crimson took a massive lead against the Tigers. That lead only continued to grow throughout the race, the Crimson took their first win of the day, crossing the line in first place with a time of 6:00.3 and the Tigers at 6:12.1.
  • At 9:15 a.m., the Fourth Varsity 8 was up. Both teams looked good initially, but the Crimson pulled a vast ten to fifteen-stroke move at the first 500-meter mark. In this move, the Crimson boat walked through the Tigers crew within one minute, bringing the Crimson ahead, approaching the halfway point. Crimson maintained that lead throughout the race, notching the Crimson's second victory so far.
    • Harvard - 5:50.9
    • Princeton - 6:12.1
  • The results were the same for the Third Varsity 8 race, where Harvard came out on top with a solid four-second lead over the Tigers at the finish.
    • Harvard - 5:44.1
    • Princeton - 5:48.6
  • In the Second Varsity 8 race, the Tigers took a surprising early jump off the start. The Tigers had been racing at a higher stroke rate than the Crimson, but today length and power showed more success than fast and aggressive. Seasoned senior coxswain Isabella Rhyu made an excellent call to build, and the Crimson pushed their bow ball forward and gained a lead. By the halfway mark, the Crimson had about a three-quarter to full boat-length lead. Crimson clenched their fourth and final victory of the day.
    • Harvard - 5:40.2
    • Princeton - 5:42.6
  • In the highly anticipated Varsity 8 race to determine the winner of the Compton Cup, Princeton turned the tables on Harvard. Princeton had a clear motive to be aggressive and go early off the start. Princeton was rating within the 40 to 45 stroke per minute range even well after the start and set a base cadence at 38 spm. At the 750 mark, the Tigers did not let up or burn out too early despite the high rating and pulled their coxswain to the Crimson boat bow ball. Crimson still responded throughout the race with countermoves to keep contact between the two boats. It was Princeton to cross the line first and became the new 2023 Compton Cup winner.
    • Princeton - 5:33.5
    • Harvard - 5:38.3
