Sailing Heads to Pair of Championship Regattas

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – This weekend Harvard Sailing will wrap up NEISA championship racing and compete in their first National Championship regatta. 
 
First, the Crimson will compete in the final championship of NEISA competition in the NEISA Open Fleet Race Championship hosted in New London, CT.  Venturing to the opposite coast, the women of Harvard Sailing will open up National Championship racing at the ICSA Women's National Team Race Championship hosted by Stanford University. 

Forecast

NEISA Open Fleet Race Championship – New London, CT
Rain and high winds are expected for both days of racing this weekend.  On Saturday, temperatures are expected to range from high 40's to mid 50's with winds remaining steady around 16 knots.  Out of the west, wind gusts are expected to range from 25 to 29 knots throughout the day.  With rain coming late on Saturday, most of the wet conditions are expected for Sunday.  Temperatures will remain very similar, and winds will be down slightly, only reaching 14 knots.  Gusts will also be down as they will range from 23 to 26 knots out of the west. 
 
ICSA Women's National Team Race Championship – Stanford, CA
Much warmer conditions are expected out the west coast this weekend as temperatures will reach as high as 73 degrees.  It is expected to be sunny on Saturday with very light winds of six knots and gusts ranging from 11 to 16 knots out of the southeast.  On Sunday, temperatures will be down as they range from 50 to 60 degrees.  Winds will be up, ranging from eight to 11 knots with gusts out of the east reaching as high as 26 knots. 

What to Know

  • Last weekend the Crimson registered three top-five finishes.  At the NEISA Women's Fleet Race Championship and the Boston Dinghy Cup the Crimson earned their fifth and sixth second place finishes for the 2023 spring.  At the Admirals' Cup, Harvard rounded out their strong weekend with a fourth-place finish. 
  • With the second-place finish at the NEISA Women's Fleet Race Championship the Crimson earned an automatic qualifying spot to the ICSA Women's Fleet Race National Championship. 
  • Harvard has looked strong so far this season as they have recorded 11 top-three finishes, including first-place finishes at the Sharpe Trophy Team Race and the Wood Trophy Team Race earlier this year. 
  • Earlier this week, the women of Harvard Sailing were represented well in the 2023 All-NEISA honors.  Sarah Burn (skipper), Corinne Lee (crew), and Juliana Ruggieri (crew) earned All-NEISA first-team honors and Cordelia Burn (skipper), Marbella Marlo (skipper), and Emily Launderville (crew) earned All-NEISA second-team honors.  Along with her second team skipper recognition, Cordelia Burn was named 2023 Sportswoman of the Year. 
  • In the most recent ICSA Rankings for Open and Women's Sailing, Harvard landed at No. 3 for Open Sailing and No. 4 for Women's Sailing. 

At the Helm

Michael O'Connor is entering his 26th season as the head coach for the Harvard Sailing program.  Under O'Connor, the Crimson have won national team race championships in both 2002 and 2003.  Additionally, they won the national coed championship and women's national title in 2003 and 2005, respectively.  Last year, O'Connor led his team back to the ICSA Team Race National Championship and the ICSA Coed Dinghy Championship.

Next Up

The Crimson will go on a near month long break before their slate of five National Championship regattas from May 23 to June 2 in King's Point, NY.
