Baseball Returns to Ivy Play with Three-Game Series at Dartmouth

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University baseball returns to Ivy League play with a three-game series at Dartmouth College including a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 8 at 11:30 a.m. (ESPN+) and a single game on Sunday, Apr. 9 at noon (ESPN+) as the Crimson enters the contest with a 6-2 record in its last eight games.

What to Know

  • The Crimson (8-16, 4-2 Ivy) enters the series with the Big Green (1-20, 0-6 Ivy), coming off 2-1 series victories in each of its first two Ivy series to begin the year. Harvard has posted a 6-2 record in its last eight games since returning to the Northeast.
  • Harvard's weekend rotation is set to feature RHP Jay Driver (0-2, 4.88 ERA) in game one, RHP Chris Clark (2-2, 4.94 ERA) in game two, and RHP Sean Matson (0-2, 7.57 ERA) in game three.
  • The Big Green is set to counter with RHP Jack Metzger (0-4, 8.53 ERA) in game one, LHP Trystan Sarcone (0-5, 11.25 ERA) in game two, and likely RHP Eddie Albert, 0-3, 9.53 ERA in game three.
  • Harvard holds a 135-131 lead in the all-time series with Dartmouth. Last season, the Big Green edged Harvard in a three-game series, 2-1. The two teams first met in 1869.
  • In the semifinals of The Baseball Beanpot, the Crimson came back from an early 2-0 deficit to tie the game at 2-2 and then plated two runs in the top of the ninth to overcome a 3-2 deficit, snapping a 10-game win streak for the Huskies, who entered the contest with a 22-4 record.
  • In its first home Ivy series of the season, Harvard swept a Sunday doubleheader from Princeton to gain a 2-1 series win over the Tigers. The Crimson won games two (11-8) and three (9-6) of the series to take the set. Harvard totaled 29 runs, 27 hits, and 22 walks over the course of the three-game series.
  • In Harvard's home opener, Crimson relievers combined to allow just one run over 6.2 innings, and senior Hunter Baldwin and first-year Gio Colasante each drove in two runs as Harvard beat Holy Cross, 6-5, at O'Donnell Field on Mar. 28.
  • In its Ivy League opening series, Harvard earned a 2-1 road series win over Penn in Philadelphia. The Crimson captured the series opener, 3-2, in 10 innings before claiming a 7-3 decision in the series finale. Junior Jake Berger and senior Logan Bravo each hit home runs in the opener before sophomore Sean Matson and first-year Callan Fang combined to limit the Quakers to three runs in the finale.
  • Harvard ranks 15th in the NCAA in doubles per game (2.46) as a team while junior Peter Messervy stands 23rd in the nation in doubles per game (0.48) as an individual. Messervy leads the Ivy League with 11 doubles. Harvard has hit at least two doubles in 19 games this year and knocked a season-high six in game two vs. FIU (Mar. 4).
  • As a team, Harvard leads the Ivy League in doubles (59) and stands third in runs (148) and home runs (24). The Crimson has tallied double-figure runs in four games and double-figure hits in nine games in 2023.
  • Junior Jake Berger leads Harvard with a .322 batting average alongside 28 hits, 13 runs, six doubles, and three home runs. He paces the league in sacrifice flies (five). In Ivy only play, he stands fourth in the conference in average (.476), fifth in OBP (.571), fourth in OPS (1.333), third in RBIs (10), and fourth in hits (10). He hit a key two-run home run in the Crimson's 3-2 win in 10 innings in game one at Penn (Mar. 24). Berger notched four hits in game two vs. Princeton (Apr. 4).
  • Sophomore George Cooper ranks second on the Crimson with a .315 batting average, while ranking eighth in the Ivy League in doubles (eight). He tallied a season-high four hits in game two at FIU (Mar. 4). Cooper went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a triple, and a double in game three at Penn (Mar. 26).
  • Junior Ben Rounds has posted a .276 batting average, 24 hits, 19 runs, six doubles, five home runs, and 20 RBIs. He stands seventh in the Ancient Eight in home runs (five) and fifth in walks (15). In Ivy only play, he leads the conference in walks (nine) and stands fourth in runs (nine) and 10th in slugging (.684). Rounds notched a season-best four hits in game three at FAU (Mar. 12).
  • Junior Peter Messervy leads the Ivy League with 11 doubles and ranks 23rd in the NCAA with 0.48 doubles per game. Messervy stands third in the conference in walks (17). He has hit .267 with 23 hits, 18 runs, and nine RBIs.
  • Senior Logan Bravo has notched a .295 average with 28 hits, 21 runs, seven doubles, four homers, and 13 RBIs. In Ivy only play, he has hit .375 with two doubles, two homers, and six RBIs. He tallied three two-hit games in the Texas A&M-CC series (Mar. 16-18) before a 3-for-5 effort with the go-ahead home run in the 10th inning in the series opener with Penn (Mar. 24).
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Chris Clark ranks 15th in the NCAA in strikeouts per nine innings (13.94), while ranking first in the Ivy League in strikeouts (48). He has tallied seven or more strikeouts in five of his six starts in 2023. Clark has registered 48 strikeouts over 31.0 innings pitched on the season. In Ivy play, he has posted 18 strikeouts over 12.0 innings alongside a 3.75 ERA.
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Jay Driver ranks sixth in the Ivy League in strikeouts (36) and has notched a 4.88 ERA, throwing 31.1 innings on the year. He has posted six or more strikeouts in four of his last five starts.
  • Senior left-handed pitcher Harrison Stovern ranks third in the Ivy League in saves (two) after notching two saves in his last three outings. Over his last five outings, he has allowed just two earned runs over 8.0 innings.
