NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Harvard Men's Heavyweight Rowing team closed its 2022-23 campaign on Saturday by competing the 156
th Harvard-Yale Regatta on the Thames River in Connecticut.
The Harvard third varsity eight opened competition at the historic event looking to conquer the two-mile course against a Yale side that won a year ago. The Crimson led early and opened a comfortable lead only to have the Bulldogs make a move with 1,000 meters to go. Harvard, however, was able to keep its lead and was never threatened, clocking in at 9:56.2. Yale finished in 9:58.7. The Crimson 3V8 has now taken 13 of the last 15 races.
After a brief intermission, the second varsity eights from both teams took the water amid rainy and windy conditions. The Crimson jumped out to lead and maintained it for a majority of the three-mile race. Yale slowly closed its gap and with about a half mile to go, took the lead and did not relinquish it, crossing the finish line in 14:29.4. Harvard pulled in seconds later at 14:33.0.
With two of the three races complete, the weather turned for the better and in time for the first varsity eights to compete. The race commenced at Gold Star Bridge with Yale taking a lead in the early going. The Bulldogs increased their lead as the four-mile race progressed and Yale ultimately won with a time of 19:14.9, ahead of Harvard and its 19:26.6 performance.
The Crimson finishes a season in which it raised four of five cups that it competed for in the regular season before it embarked on its postseason run at Eastern Sprints and the IRA National Regatta.
