Nick Grill Joins Men’s Lacrosse Coaching Staff

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard men's lacrosse added to its coaching staff today with the hiring of Nick Grill, who joins the group as an assistant coach. Grill comes to the Crimson after one-year stints at Vermont and Binghamton, where he served in the same role.

Gerry Byrne, The Frisbie Family Head Coach for Harvard Lacrosse, believes Grill's hiring will help elevate the Crimson's defensive skill and execution in 2024.

"One of the best young defensive coaches in Division I, Coach Grill brings energy and passion married with credibility and achievement with him to our program. Being a current PLL starter and a product of the University of Maryland defensive culture have led to impressive work that he displayed at Binghamton and Vermont," said Byrne. "I look forward to partnering with Nick to further advance our young crop of talented defenders to develop great on ball and off ball players."

A former All-American, Grill began coaching in 2021 after a successful collegiate career with the University of Maryland and Marquette University lacrosse programs. After starting for the Golden Eagles for three seasons and earning three All-Big East selections, Grill transferred to Maryland where he emerged as one of the nation's top close defenders.

In his final season with the Terrapins in 2021, Grill earned USILA and Inside Lacrosse All-America honors after helping his squad reach the national championship game. Grill's efforts also netted him the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year award to go along with Second Team All-Big Ten and NCAA All-Tournament Team honors.

A current Professional Lacrosse League (PLL) veteran, Grill was selected in the fourth round of the 2021 PLL College draft by the Whipsnakes Lacrosse Club. The LSM, now playing for the Chrome Lacrosse Club, is currently in the midst of his fourth professional season.

A Bridgewater, N.J. native, Grill holds a degree in sociology from the University of Maryland.

Grill will inherit a defensive unit that is coming a season in which it finished in the top-five nationally in opponent clearing percentage and caused turnovers while also leading the Ivy League in man-down defense. The Crimson returns the bulk of its key defensive players including former All-American Greg Campisi and Second Team All-Ivy League defender, Collin Bergstrom.

The Crimson will return to campus this Fall to begin preparation for the 2024 season that is slated to begin in mid-February.
