Harvard Volleyball Tops Providence 3-2 in Thrilling 5-Set Match

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard Women's Volleyball team (7-2) closed out a week of action at home with an exciting contest against the Providence Friars, winning Saturday's match by a score of 3-2. The Crimson put the Friars away in five sets of 25-21, 14-25, 25-15, 24-26 and 15-11.  

Ashley Wang and Katie Vorhies were named to the BC-Harvard Invite All-Tournament Team for their efforts in the three matches this week, highlighted by Saturday's performances against Providence. 

The first set was an exciting 25 points from start to finish, with multiple volleys lasting almost 60 seconds as both Crimson and Friar student-athletes made many saves beyond the baseline to keep the ball in play. The Crimson took the lead off long points from 19-24, making it to 25 as the Friars were left at 21.

Providence started set two with a lead and held onto it for all 25 points, holding the Crimson to 14 in the set. After two sets, Ashley Wang was already on her way to a triple-double with seven kills, nine assists and nine digs.

Harvard was back on top after three, leading the way throughout the frame to make up for the loss of the second set. The Crimson won the set 25-15 as Wang achieved her fourth triple-double of the season and Katie Vorhies made it to 11 kills.

The fourth set reflected the tight battle of the first, as both teams stayed within two point of until the Crimson pulled away after 15 points. The Friars made a comeback once Harvard hit 20 and pushed the game to a 24-24 tie, at which point they took over and won the set 26-24, forcing a fifth set.

The fifth set was a comeback for Harvard, as the Friars started with a 7-3 lead. Harvard took over from there, chipping away at that lead and taking it for themselves at 10. The Crimson then built up a four-point lead of their own and finished the set 15-10 to wi the match 3-2.

Harvard Highlights

  • Wang is the only player in NCAA Division I women's volleyball to have fours triple-doubles this season after finishing tonight's match with a career-high 20 kills, 24 assists and 13 digs. She also still holds her place atop the leaderboard for most aces in one match with nine and most aces per set with 0.86.
  • Vorhies set a new season-high in kills with 18 to follow Wang's team-leading career high of 20. Brynne Faltinsky tied her season high as well with six kills.
  • Wang's 24 assists led the team followed by Rocky Aguirre with 21. These two also led the Crimson in digs as Aguirre posted 15 and Wang had 13.
  • Harvard set a season high in total blocks with 15 and tied their season-high in solo blocks with four, including two from Ariana White, one from Vorhies and one from Faltinsky.
  • The team put up their second-most digs in 2023 with 71.
  • With a win over the Friars, Harvard now moves one match closer to evening the all-time series and has lengthened their win streak to three games, winning every 12 years in 2000, 2012 and now 2023.
