CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After starting the 2024-25 season on a high note at the Western Invitational in San Diego, California, Harvard fencing returns to its home state for the long-running Beanpot tournament. The Crimson will face Brandeis, MIT, and tournament host Boston College on Wednesday, Nov. 13.
WHAT TO KNOW:
- Both the women's team and men's team posted 4-2 records at the Western Invitational, as the Crimson women earned victories against Air Force, Incarnate Word, Northwestern, and UC San Diego, while the men defeated Air Force, Incarnate Word, Brandeis, and UC San Diego.
- In her return to collegiate competition after winning two historic medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, senior Lauren Scruggs shined at the Western Invitational, posting a stellar 17-1 record over two days of competition.
- A first-year from Dallas, Texas, Yasmine Khamis enjoyed a sensational collegiate debut in the Golden State, as she posted 15 victories to lead the epee squad to a 41-13 mark at the Western Invitational.
- Another collegiate debutant, first-year Colin Heathcock excelled on the second day of competition. A member of Team USA's roster for the 2024 Paris Olympics, Heathcock went 8-1 at the Western Invitational, as his lone loss against Ohio State was decided by just one touch.
- Over the past 16 years, the Crimson have dominated the Beanpot, orchestrating several memorable moments against its intrastate rivals.
- The women have won the Beanpot 16 years in a row, while the men have secured the title for 15 straight years.
- Last season saw both teams sweep the competition at the 2023 iteration of the Beanpot, as the men secured the title with a gutsy performance in a 14-13 win against Brandeis.
- Harvard is led by head coach Daria Schneider, who is in her sixth season at the helm of the Crimson fencing program.
- Scruggs, senior Emily Vermeule, senior Anthony Malysz, and sophomore Henry Lawson are the Crimson's team captains this season.
