Sailing Trio to Compete at ICSA Singlehanded National Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard Sailing trio of Kate Danielson, Robby Meek and Sophia Montgomery is scheduled to compete this weekend, Nov. 9-10, in St. Petersburg, Florida, at the ICSA Singlehanded National Championships. Danielson and Montgomery are slated for the women's regatta, while Meek is set to appear in the open version of the event.

What to Know

  • Danielson and Montgomery will vie for a national title after earning two of 12 at-large berths for the women's championship. The duo will be a part of an 18-sailor field after strong showings at the NEISA women's singlehanded regatta in mid-September. Danielson was the runner-up, falling two points shy (28) of first place, while Montgomery finished in fourth place with a score of 34.
  • Montgomery enters the regatta as the 2022 champion, which was the Crimson's first ICSA women's crown since Margaret Gill in 2001. Gill also won the program's first title in 1999.
  • Meek was one of six automatic qualifiers for the ICSA Open Singlehanded National Championship after winning the NEISA event in Providence, Rhode Island, in September. The sophomore finished the event with a score of 18, easily capturing the title, with the runner-up, Mathias Reimer of Yale, earning a 39. Meek will look to win the crown against a field that includes 17 other athletes.
  • Meek's victory at the NEISA regatta marked the sixth singlehanded title in program history and first since Henry Marshall in 2018.
  • Harvard has won three ICSA open singlehanded championships in its history, with the first coming in 1970, when Robert Doyle emerged victorious. Vincent Porter (2004) and Marshall (2018) were the Crimson's other winners.
  • When the Crimson competes at St. Petersburg Yacht Club, it will mark its first competition since the weekend of Oct. 26-27. Harvard won the Victorian Urn Trophy, finished in second at the Schell Trophy, came in 10th at the Nickerson Trophy, and posted a 12th-place effort at the Terrier Invitational.
  • The Crimson's win at the Urn secured NEISA Women's Sailor-of-the-Week accolades for Zoey Ziskind, Peyton Hadfield, Danielson and Christina Chen. For Ziskind, Hadfield and Chen, it marked their second NEISA honor of the season. For Danielson, it was the first time the first-year was recognized. The quartet garnered weekly accolades after winning the B-division with all single-digit finishes to go with one 10th-place performance. Their win in the final race of the regatta secured the overall team win for Harvard.

The Crimson will put a bow on its Fall 2024 campaign next weekend, Nov. 16-17, when Justin Callahan competes at the ICSA Match Racing National Championships in Oyster Bay, New York.
