Skiing to Compete at Middlebury Carnival for EISA Championships, NCAA Regionals

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University skiing will compete at the Middlebury Carnival for the EISA Championships and NCAA Regional Championships from Feb. 23-24 with alpine events at the Middlebury Snowbowl in Hancock, Vermont and nordic competition at the Rikert Outdoor Center in Ripton, Vermont.

What to Know

  • Friday's competition will feature slalom on the alpine side starting at 9:00 a.m. and the 7.5k skate for nordic starting 10:00 a.m. Saturday's racing will include giant slalom starting at 9:00 a.m. prior to the 20k classic mass start for nordic starting at 10:00 a.m.
  • In the NCAA Rankings, senior Rémi Drolet ranks first overall, first in the classic and second in the freestyle in men's nordic. senior Elsie Halvorsen stands 16th in the women's alpine rankings, including 15th in slalom.
  • Senior Rémi Drolet has placed in the top-three in seven individual carnival events in which he has competed this winter, including three victories – the 15k classic and 7.5k skate at the Harvard Carnival as well as the 10k classic at the Williams Carnival.
  • Senior Elsie Halvorsen has tallied nine top-30 finishes this season, seven top-20 showings, and one top-10 effort with her eighth-place finish in the slalom from the rescheduled UVM carnival.
  • Senior Liam McNamara has posted top-30 finishes in each of eight events this season, including a 13th-place finish in the slalom at the Dartmouth Carnival.
  • Junior Quincy Donley has notched six top-30 individual efforts on the year, including 17th-place finishes in both the 15k classic at the Harvard Carnival and 1.3k skate at the Dartmouth Carnival.
  • At last year's EISA Championships hosted in conjunction with the St. Lawrence Carnival, Rémi Drolet came in first in the 20k classic and third in the 10k freestyle, Quincy Donley came in 27th in the women's 20k classic, Elsie Halvorsen placed 15th in the women's giant slalom, Liam McNamara finished 24th in the men's giant slalom, and Luke Kearing and Matt Ryan came in ninth and 11th respectively in the men's slalom.
  • In the Crimson's final racing before the EISA Championships at the Williams Carnival, senior Rémi Drolet won the men's 10k classic, senior Elsie Halvorsen placed in the top-20 three times as part of a three-day weekend, and junior Matt Ryan notched a 10th-place finish in an NCAA slalom qualifier as part of the rescheduled UVM carnival.
  • At the 2024 Dartmouth Carnival, senior Elsie Halvorsen placed 11th in the women's giant slalom, senior Liam McNamara came in 13th in the men's slalom, and junior Quincy Donley finished 17th in the women's 1.3k skate sprint to lead Harvard.
  • The Crimson enjoyed a successful 2024 Harvard Carnival, as the program hosted the event for the third time in the last five years. Senior Rémi Drolet won both of the men's nordic events, capturing the 15k classic mass start and the 7.5 skate while junior Quincy Donley came in 17th in the women's 15k classic and 20th in the 7.5 skate. On the alpine side junior Matt Ryan placed 10th in men's slalom while senior Elsie Halvorsen finished 12th in women's slalom and 13th in women's giant slalom.
  • Harvard's alpine program made its season debut at the Colby Carnival (Jan. 19-20). Junior Matt Ryan placed 11th in men's slalom, and senior Elsie Halvorsen finished in 13th place in women's slalom to pace the Crimson on the weekend.
  • On the nordic side of the Colby Carnival, senior Rémi Drolet continued his run of top-three finishes to open the year, placing second in the men's 20k classic and third in the men's 7k skate.
  • In the first competition of the 2024 season, Harvard's nordic side came in seventh at the UVM Carnival (Jan. 13-14) with senior Rémi Drolet turning in a pair of top-three finishes. Drolet came in second in the classic sprint before placing third in the 10k skate. Alpine events were postponed due to weather conditions.
  • Harvard returns a pair of NCAA qualifiers in senior nordic skier Rémi Drolet and junior alpine skier Matt Ryan. Drolet won the men's 20k classic at the 2023 NCAA Championships while Ryan qualified for NCAAs in 2022.
  • The Crimson's captains for this season include seniors Elsie Halvorsen and Liam McNamara on the alpine side and junior Quincy Donley and senior Rémi Drolet on the nordic side.
  • Harvard's 2023-24 roster features eight skiers on the alpine side and 12 skiers on the nordic side. The group includes four seniors, three juniors, four sophomores, and nine first-years.
  • Scott MacPherson – The Peter H. Carter '69 Head Coach for Harvard Alpine Skiing – stands in his seventh season at the helm of the alpine program in 2023-24. While at Harvard, MacPherson has twice earned EISA Coach of the Year honors (2019-20, 2022-23).
  • Sam Benzing – The Paul J. Finnegan Family Head Coach for Harvard Nordic Skiing – enters her first season as the leader of the Crimson's nordic program. Benzing served as an assistant coach at the College of Saint Scholastica prior to arriving in Cambridge. 

Next Up

Harvard will look to send representatives to the NCAA Championships hosted by the University of Colorado, Boulder from March 6-9 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado with alpine events at Mount Werner and nordic events at Howelsen Hill. The championship's schedule of events will include giant slalom on March 6, the 7.5k individual freestyle on March 7, slalom on March 8, and the 20k classic mass start on March 9.
 
The NCAA will announce selections for the championship on Tuesday, Feb. 27.
