Softball Hits Six Home Runs in Doubleheader Sweep of Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Behind a powerful hitting display at the plate, Harvard picked up the series win against Brown on the road, sweeping the Bears in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

Harvard opened the series with a 3-0 victory against the hosts. At the plate, first-year infielder Sophie Sun and senior infielder Madi Mays combined for three home runs, driving in all three Crimson runs with the long ball. The Crimson pitching staff picked up its third shutout of the campaign as well.

The day ended with the Crimson coming from behind to best the Bears 5-3 in game two. Mays and Sun each hit another home run in the victory, as sophomore infielder Finley Payne added another solo home run as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:

Senior Anna Reed got the start in the circle in game one. The veteran was outstanding, as Reed shutdown the Brown (6-15, 1-4 Ivy)  offense, tossing a complete game shutout with two strikeouts.

After three scoreless innings, Harvard (12-11, 3-4) jumped out to a 1-0 lead. On a 2-1 count, Mays launched a leadoff solo home run to deep left field, scoring the first run of the game. A senior captain, Mays has hit multiple home runs in a season for the first time in career, raising her career total to three.

The Crimson found more power at the plate in the sixth inning, putting the contest out of reach with back-to-back solo home runs. After fouling a pitch off, Sun got a hold of a pitch and sent it to deep left field for a solo home run, her team-leading fifth homer in 2024, 2-0. The very next at-bat, Mays hit her second home run of the game, recording the first multi-HR game of her Crimson career, 3-0.

Harvard recorded three runs on eight hits. Two Harvard student-athletes posted a multi-hit showing in game one of the series, as Mays and sophomore outfielder Lael Ayala each recorded two hits in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO:

Brown lit up the scoreboard first in the second game of the twinbill on Saturday afternoon. In the second inning, the Bears drove in a run with an RBI single, 1-0.

The Crimson immediately responded in the top of the third inning, evening the score at one each with three consecutive hits. On the seventh pitch of the at-bat, Ayala smashed a leadoff double off the wall in centerfield. Senior outfielder Lauren Bobowski dropped a perfect bunt, putting runners on the corner for Sun. The Austin, Texas native sent Ayala home with a line drive RBI-single, 1-1.

The momentum swung back to Brown in the bottom of the fourth inning, as the hosts regained the lead with an RBI double.

Sun manufactured another marquee moment with a great show of hustle, bringing Harvard level with an inside-the-park home run after a Brown outfielder lost the ball in sun in the outfield, 2-2. With two outs, sophomore Finley Payne smashed a long solo home run to deep right center field, providing Harvard its first lead of the contest, 3-2.

In the next frame, Harvard doubled its advantage. With first-year outfielder Audrey Szollosi on third base, senior catcher Allison O'Heany slapped a line drive RBI-single to center field, pushing the Crimson lead to two, 4-2.

The hosts kept fighting in the bottom of the sixth inning, cutting into the Harvard lead with a two out RBI-single, 4-3. The next inning, Mays fired her third home run of the day, as the ball just cleared the fence in dead center field to restore Harvard's two-run lead, 5-3.

The Crimson scored five runs on 14 hits in the game two win, setting a new season-high for hits in a game. First-Year Nicolette Hunter started the game in the circle, lasting 4.1 innings while only allowing two runs. Sophomore Riley Flynn provided 2.2 innings out of the bullpen, containing the Brown offense to just one run and two hits with three strikeouts. Sun, Mays, Szollosi, and Ayala all produced multi-hit efforts in game two.

HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Across both games against Brown, Harvard hit six home runs, as the long ball accounted for six of the eight runs scored against the Bears.
