Baseball Beats Princeton in Series Finale, 14-2, Takes Series Win

PRINCETON, N.J. – Sophomore right-handed pitcher Callan Fang threw seven scoreless innings, and the Crimson matched a season high with 14 runs as Harvard University baseball beat Princeton University, 14-2, on Sunday afternoon at Clarke Field to take a 2-1 series victory.
 
Playing in a rubber match in the series finale, the Crimson (8-20, 5-7 Ivy) – winners in four of its last six games – took an 8-0 lead through five innings and a 14-0 edge through six frames on its way to the victory over the Tigers (10-19, 6-6 Ivy). Harvard sits one game back of fourth place in the Ivy League standings.
 
On the mound, Fang threw 7.0 scoreless innings in the win, allowing no runs on six hits and no walks with eight strikeouts.
 
At the plate, Harvard totaled a season-high 14 runs, and posted 12 hits for its 14th game with double-figure hits this year. Senior Jake Berger hit his first home run of the season, and four members of the Crimson posted multi-hit games, including Berger (two hits, two runs), junior William Lybrook (two doubles, three runs), senior Ben Rounds (three RBIs, two hits), and junior Matt Giberti (two hits, two runs).

  • Sophomore Callan Fang threw 7.0 scoreless innings in the win, allowing no runs on six hits and no walks with eight strikeouts.
  • Senior Jake Berger hit his first home run of the season and 14th of his career with a solo shot in the fifth. He totaled two hits, two runs, and an RBI in the game.
  • Junior William Lybrook posted a 2-for-3 effort with two doubles, three runs, and a walk.
  • Senior Ben Rounds finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, a double, a run, and a walk.

How It Happened

  • The Crimson struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Giberti plated the frame's first run with an RBI single up the middle before Rounds sent an RBI double out to right field.
  • Harvard pushed its lead to 6-0 with four runs in the top of the fourth. After Berger scored on a wild pitch, Rickheim drove a two-run double down the right field line. Cooper capped the stanza's scoring with an RBI single into center field.
  • Berger's solo home run to right field highlighted a two-run fifth for the visitors as Harvard moved ahead 8-0.
  • The Crimson plated six runs in the top of the sixth to extend its edge to 14-0. Messervy, Rickheim, and Cooper each notched an RBI before Rounds capped the frame's scoring with a two-run single to left field.
  • The Tigers plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth to account for the final margin.
