Messervy Hits Go-Ahead Homer, Baseball Powers Past Stonehill, 17-14

EASTON, Mass. – Senior Peter Messervy hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the ninth inning as part of a five-RBI day, senior Jake Berger tallied four hits and four RBIs, and Harvard University baseball powered its way past Stonehill College, 17-14, on Tuesday afternoon at Lou Gorman Field.
 
Facing a 14-11 deficit entering the ninth inning after holding a 9-2 lead earlier in the game, the Crimson (9-20) plated six runs in the top of the ninth to rally past the host Skyhawks (10-19). Harvard improved to 4-1 in its last five games and 5-2 in its last seven contests.
 
Messervy totaled five RBIs, two hits, and two runs alongside his first home run of the season. Berger finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs, four runs, a double, a walk, and a stolen base while senior Ben Rounds and first-year Tyler Shulman each went 3-for-5.
 
Harvard registered season highs in runs (17), RBIs (17), and hits (19) in the contest with six members of the Crimson posting multi-hit games. 

Harvard Highlights

  • Senior Peter Messervy totaled five RBIs, two hits, two runs, and the go-ahead three-run home run in the top of the ninth. He hit his first homer of the season and fourth homer of his career.
  • Senior Jake Berger finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs, four runs, a double, a walk, and a stolen base.
  • Senior Ben Rounds posted a 3-for-5 effort with two runs, an RBI, a double, and a walk.
  • First-year Tyler Shulman went 3-for-5 with two runs, an RBI, and a walk.
  • Sophomore Max Lane tallied two hits, two runs, an RBI, a walk, and a double.
  • First-year Dominic Brancel added two hits, two RBIs, and a walk.
  • Senior Chris Snopek registered two RBIs, two runs, a hit, and a walk.
  • Junior George Cooper notched a pinch-hit single in the ninth and scored a run.
  • Junior Matt Giberti contributed a hit, run, walk, and stolen base. He moved to 17-for-18 on stolen bases on the season.
  • Harvard tallied season highs in runs (17), RBIs (17), and hits (19). The Crimson totaled double-figure runs for the sixth time this year and double-digit hits for the 15th time this season.
  • Six members of the Crimson tallied multi-hit games, including three with three or more hits, and four Crimson posted multi-RBI games. 

How It Happened

  • The Crimson opened the contest's scoring with three runs in the top of the first. Berger brought home a run with an RBI single to right field prior to RBIs from Snopek and Messervy.
  • The Skyhawks trimmed the margin to 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the first.
  • An RBI single to left field from Rounds pushed Harvard's lead to 4-1 in the top of the second.
  • A sacrifice fly from first-year Jack Rickheim gave the visitors a 5-1 edge in the top of the third.
  • Stonehill came within 5-2 in the bottom of the third following a solo home run.
  • Harvard plated four more runs in the top of the fourth to move ahead 9-2. A two-run single from Brancel and RBI singles from Berger and Messervy accounted for the frame's scoring.
  • The visitors cut their deficit to 9-3 with a run in the last of the fourth and trimmed the margin to 9-7 with four runs in the fifth.
  • An RBI single up the middle from Shulman in the top of the seventh moved the difference to 10-7.
  • Stonehill pulled ahead 12-10 behind five runs in the bottom of the seventh.
  • In the top of the eighth, Lane hit an RBI double to left field to bring Harvard back within 12-11.
  • The Skyhawks scored twice in the last of the eighth to take a 14-11 edge.
  • Harvard responded with six runs in the top of the ninth to re-gain a 17-14 advantage. A two-run double to right center from Berger pulled the Crimson within 14-13 before an RBI single up the middle from Snopek knotted the score at 14-14. Messervy then launched a three-run home run to left field to propel Harvard ahead 17-14.
  • Junior right-hander Cole Cleary did not allow a runner to advance past first base in the bottom of the ninth to close out the win.
