Baseball Defeats Dartmouth in Series Opener, 9-2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior right-hander Sean Matson and first-year right-hander Truman Pauley combined to limit the Big Green to two runs, senior Ben Rounds and junior William Lybrook each hit home runs, and Harvard University baseball defeated Dartmouth College, 9-2, in the series opener on Saturday afternoon at O'Donnell Field.

Competing in the first game of a three-game set and the opening contest of a seven-game homestand, the Crimson (10-20, 6-7 Ivy) plated six runs in the bottom of the third to gain separation from the visiting Big Green (10-18, 6-8 Ivy). Harvard improved to 6-2 in its last eight games, 5-1 in its last six outings, and 3-1 in its last three Ivy contests.

On the mound, Matson threw 6.0 innings in the start and win with five strikeouts while Pauley tossed 3.0 scoreless innings of relief in his first collegiate save.

At the plate, five members of the Crimson put together multi-hit games, including Rounds (2-for-4, home run), senior Jake Berger (2-for-4, two RBIs), first-year Jack Rickheim (2-for-4, two RBIs), senior Peter Messervy (2-for-4), and junior George Cooper (2-for-5, triple, two runs).

The two teams altered the weekend series due to weather conditions, playing a single game on Saturday and moving the weekend's doubleheader to Sunday.
