Baseball Tops Dartmouth in Series Finale, 13-5, Captures Series Win

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior William Lybrook hit a home run in each game of the day as Harvard University baseball topped Dartmouth College, 13-5, in the series finale after dropping a narrow 6-5 decision in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at O'Donnell Field with the Crimson taking a 2-1 series victory on the weekend.
 
Competing in games two and three of a seven-game homestand, the Crimson (11-21, 7-8 Ivy) scored 10 straight runs to gain separation from the Big Green (11-19, 6-9 Ivy) in game two after nearly rallying from a 6-1 deficit in the day's opening contest. Harvard took the 2-1 series win after earning a 9-2 victory in the series opener on Saturday.
 
Harvard won its second straight conference series and moved to 7-3 in its last 10 games overall. The Crimson now stands in a three-way tie for fourth place in the Ivy League standings.
 
Lybrook hit a home run in each contest of the three-game series and now has five home runs on the year.
 
In game two, six members of the Crimson posted multi-hit games while Harvard totaled double-figure runs for the seventh time this year and double-figure hits for the 17th time this season. Lybrook went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs, and three runs while junior George Cooper finished 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs. On the mound, sophomore right-hander Callan Fang threw 7.2 innings in the win with 11 strikeouts. He notched 11 or more strikeouts for the third time in his last four outings.
 
In game one, Lybrook hit a two-run home run while senior left-hander Uday Narottam (3.1 innings) and junior right-hander Tanner Smith (0.2 innings) combined to throw 4.0 innings of scoreless relief.

GAME 1: Dartmouth 6, Harvard 5

Junior William Lybrook hit his second home run in as many games, and senior Uday Narottam and junior Tanner Smith combined to throw 4.0 innings of scoreless relief, but Harvard fell to Dartmouth in Saturday's first game, 6-5.
 
Facing a 6-1 deficit, the Crimson scored four straight runs including a two-run home run from Lybrook in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 6-5 before the Big Green held on for the decision.
 
Lybrook hit his second homer of the series, fourth of the year, and fifth of his career while Narottam (3.1 innings) and Smith (0.2 innings) did not allow the Big Green to score in the sixth through ninth frames.

How It Happened

  • The Big Green opened the game's scoring, plating five runs in the top of the fourth, including a grand slam.
  • Harvard trimmed the margin to 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth as Rounds came home on a ground ball.
  • The Big Green added a solo home run in the top of the fifth to make the score 6-1.
  • The Crimson cut the deficit to 6-2 with a run in the last of the fifth. After Rickheim doubled, Fang brought him home with an RBI single through the right side.
  • Harvard pulled within 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth behind an RBI single into center field from Lane.
  • Lybrook drove a two-run home run to left center field – his second homer in as many days – to bring the Crimson within 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth. 

GAME 2: Harvard 13, Dartmouth 5 

Juniors George Cooper and William Lybrook each hit a home run, sophomore right-hander Callan Fang tallied 11 strikeouts over 7.2 innings, and Harvard topped Dartmouth 13-5, in the series finale to take a 2-1 series win.
 
With the score tied at 3-3, the Crimson plated five runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to move ahead 11-3 and gain separation from the Big Green.

How It Happened

  • The Big Green started the contest's scoring with a run in the top of the second.
  • Dartmouth went ahead 3-0 behind a two-run home run in the top of the third.
  • Harvard tied the score at 3-3 with a pair of home runs in the bottom of the third. Cooper drove a two-run homer out to right center field to start the scoring. Lybrook then sent a solo shot out to right field for his third homer in as many games in the series.
  • The Crimson plated five runs in the last of the fifth to take an 8-3 advantage. Lybrook brought in the frame's first two runs with a two-run single to center field before Feller hit an RBI single to right field. Snopek capped the stanza's scoring with a two-run single to left field.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Harvard scored three more runs to move its margin to 11-3. Rounds scored on a wild pitch before Kang sent a two-run double down the right field line.
  • In the last of the sixth, Feller came home following a wild pitch before Lane hit an RBI single to right field to make the score 13-3.
  • The Big Green added two runs in the top of the ninth for the final tally of 13-5.
