Softball, Penn Ready for Weekend Series

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard softball returns to Ivy League action this weekend, squaring off against Penn at Soldiers Field. A doubleheader kicks the series off on Saturday, Apr. 20, with game one beginning at 12:30 p.m. and game two starting at 3 p.m. The Crimson and Quakers wrap up the series on Sunday, Apr. 21 at 12:30 p.m.

Admission to Soldiers Field is free of charge and all three contests will air live on ESPN+.

CRIMSON UPDATES:
  • Harvard is 18-14 in 2024, holding third place in the Ivy League standings with a 9-6 record in conference play.
  • In its last 10 Ivy League games, Harvard has dominated the competition, holding an 8-2 record in that span while outscoring its opponents 65-37 in that span.
  • Last time out, the Crimson came up short in a 9-5 defeat against No. 23 Boston University, as the Terriers scored four runs in the seventh inning to take the win.
  • Against Columbia last weekend, Harvard earned its first sweep in Ivy League play this season, outscoring the Lions, 26-11, across all three games.
  • Senior pitcher Anna Reed earned Ivy League Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time this season on Tuesday. In the series opening 11-0 run-rule win, Reed tossed a no-hitter, the Crimson's first since 2023.
  • For a league-best fourth time this season, first-year Sophie Sun collected Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors. A native of Austin, Texas, Sun drove in a team-high seven runs against Columbia.
  • In just her first collegiate season, Sun is emerging as one of the best offensive threats in the Ancient Eight. The shortstop leads the Ivy League in batting average (.442), OPS (1.244), hits (42), total bases (73), and slugging percentage (.768).
  • Among all first-year student-athletes in the country, Sun's .442 batting average and .768 slugging percentage each rank second.
  • Fellow first-year Nicolette Hunter is leading the Crimson pitching staff, as the Camarillo, California leads the conference in earned run average (1.90). Hunter is the only pitcher in the Ivy League with an ERA below 2.00.
  • Along with Hunter, Harvard boasts one of the best pitching staff's in the Ivy League, as the Crimson boast the best team ERA in the conference (2.92).
  • At the plate, Harvard's team batting average of .299 leads the Ivy League, as the Crimson is also second in runs scored (151).
SCOUTING THE QUAKERS:
  • Penn travels to Cambridge with a 7-22 overall record a 2-10 mark in Ivy League action.
  • In its last Ivy League series, the Quakers suffered three losses to first-place Yale at home.
  • Harvard and Penn have met 94 times on the softball field, as the Crimson lead the all-time series, 70-24.
  • The Crimson own a six-game winning streak against the Quakers, owning a 45-8-1 record against Penn in Cambridge.

Harvard wraps its homestand on Tuesday, Apr. 23, as the Crimson hosts Merrimack for a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.
