Harvard Men's Lacrosse Walking Off the Field

Men's Lacrosse

No. 18 Men’s Lacrosse Falls to No. 9 Cornell

Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 18 Harvard men's lacrosse team fell to the No. 9 Cornell on the road this afternoon, as the Big Red came away with a 15-8 victory over the Crimson. Logan Ip's three points and Christian Barnard's 13 saves paced Harvard (7-5, 1-4 Ivy) in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Crimson made the trip out to Ithaca looking to upset the Big Red and keep its Ivy League Tournament hopes alive. Two of the most exciting offenses in the nation met on the field in what was a key Ivy League matchup for both sides.
  • Harvard controlled the game early, putting the clamps on the Big Red and shutting them down for the first seven minutes of the contest. Senior goalie Christian Barnard made four saves in the opening sequence and Logan Ip scored the first goal of the game to help Harvard grab the early advantage.
  • After a Big Red equalizer, the defense stepped up big again, forcing a missed shot that put Harvard on fast break. Barnard quickly moved the ball to Logan Darrin who found Ray Dearth with a clear path to the cage. Dearth beat the goalie to give the lead back to the Crimson.
  • The Big Red used a four-goal run to take the lead. Graham Blake answered for the Crimson with a jaw-dropping goal. After catching a pass in the alley, Blake weaved around a pair of Big Red defenders before throwing a shovel shot between his legs with his back turned to the cage, somehow finding the net to make the score 5-3 in favor of Cornell. That score would hold at the end of the first quarter.
  • The second quarter saw only two goals find the back of the net - both going to Cornell - to help the side take a 7-3 lead into the halftime break. Barnard made another handful of saves - increasing his total to 10 in the first half – to keep the Crimson within striking distance.
  • Cornell struck first in the second half, after a series of Crimson chances came up empty. Logan Ip finally broke the scoreless streak with his second goal of the day. Cornell answered with a three-goal run to take a seven-goal lead, it's largest of the game.
  • The Crimson added three goals, two from Sam King and the other from Blake, to make the score 12-7 at the 10-minute mark in the final quarter.
  • Liam Griffiths found the back of the net for Harvard's eighth goal of the game. Cornell added a trio of goals down the stretch to pick up a 15-8 win over the Crimson.
