CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Sailing finished in second place at the 2024 ICSA Open Team Racing National Championship. The Crimson, which won the 2023 national title, finished behind champion Roger Williams.
Harvard finished with a 17.50-4 record, falling a half-win shy of Roger Williams and its 18-4 mark. Yale (15-7), Brown (14-8) and Stanford (13-9) rounded out the top five.
Harvard and the rest of the field began the Round of 8 on Friday, with the Crimson posting a 3-0 record when the action was called due to darkness. Saturday brought a wind-less morning that caused a four-hour delay.
Once the action resumed, the goal was to get through the Round 8, and the Round of 4 if time allowed. With several races left to complete,
Justin Callahan and
Kennedy Leehealey,
Lachlain McGranahan and
Marbella Marlo, and
Mitchell Callahan and
Alexandra Dorofeev took to their boats and unfortunately opened with a 3-4-5 loss to Georgetown.
The Crimson finished the round with three consecutive victories, taking down Stanford (1-2-5) and Brown (1-2-5) before scoring a huge win over Roger Williams, 1-3-4. The RWU victory pulled Harvard to within a half-win of the Hawks. Time, however, was not on the Crimson's side as the regatta was operating at a 5 p.m. ET hard-stop. With about 15 minutes left before the deadline, it was deemed there was not enough time to complete the Round of 4, delivering the national championship to Roger Williams.
Harvard returns to action on Sunday when the Crimson compete at the ICSA Women's Team Racing National Championship on the Charles River. ESPN+ will air the action live, beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
