Baseball Bests Penn in Series, Home Finale, 14-4

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Ben Rounds went 3-for-3 with a home run, junior William Lybrook hit a home run for his fifth straight Ivy game, and all nine members of the Crimson's batting order posted a hit as Harvard University baseball beat the University of Pennsylvania, 14-4, in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at O'Donnell Field.
 
Playing in its regular season home finale, the Crimson (12-24, 8-10 Ivy) staked itself to a 5-1 lead and then scored the final nine runs of the game – including five runs in the bottom of the sixth – after the Quakers (17-21, 9-9 Ivy) pulled within 5-4 in the top of the sixth. Harvard stands one game back of Penn and Yale for fourth place in the Ivy standings.
 
Harvard matched a season high in Ivy League play with 14 runs and totaled 18 hits – a season high in Ivy play. All nine members of the Crimson batting order notched a hit, including eight batters with multi-hit games.
 
Rounds went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, two runs, a double, and a home run. He hit his eighth homer of the season and 14th of his career. Lybrook recorded two hits, three RBIs, a home run, and a run. He hit a home run in his fifth straight Ivy game, tallied his seventh homer of the year, and notched the eighth of his career.

  • Sophomore Max Lane registered two hits, three RBIs, three runs, a triple, and two stolen bases.
  • Junior George Cooper contributed two hits, two RBIs, and two runs.
  • Senior Peter Messervy went 2-for-3 with three runs and two walks.
  • Senior Jake Berger compiled two hits, an RBI, a double, and a run.
  • Sophomore Jordan Kang logged two hits, including a double.
  • First-year Jack Rickheim provided two hits, an RBI, and a run.
  • Senior Chris Snopek added a hit, an RBI, and a run.
  • First-year right-hander Will Burns tossed 2.0 innings of scoreless relief, permitting two hits and no walks with a career-high five strikeouts.
  • Sophomore right-hander Callan Fang threw 3.0 innings in the start, allowing one run on four hits and one walk with four strikeouts.
  • First-year right-hander Andrew Abler hurled 1.0 inning of scoreless relief giving up no hits and one walk with two strikeouts in his first appearance since March 27.

How It Happened

  • Harvard opened the game's scoring in the bottom of the first as Berger hit an RBI single through the right side.
  • Penn knotted the score at 1-1 with a run in the top of the second.
  • The Crimson took a 5-1 lead with four runs in the bottom of the second. Cooper started the scoring with a two-run single to center field before Rounds brought in a pair with an inside the park home run to right field.
  • The Quakers pulled within 5-3 in the top of the fifth behind a pair of solo home runs and moved within 5-4 in the sixth with another solo homer.
  • Harvard staked itself to a 10-5 advantage in the bottom of the sixth behind a pair of extra-base hits. Lane initiated the scoring with a two-run triple to right center before Lybrook blasted a three-run home run to left field – his fifth straight Ivy game with a homer.
  • The Crimson added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to make the margin 12-4 with an RBI single to right field from Lane and an RBI double to left field from Rounds.
  • Harvard tacked on two additional runs in the last of the eighth to go ahead 14-4 with an RBI single from Snopek and sacrifice fly from Rickheim.
