MARSEILLE, France – Harvard Sailing rising junior Sophia Montgomery, who is competing for Thailand, posted her top finish of the Olympics, coming in sixth place of Race 8 of the Women's Dinghy on Sunday on Marseille Marina. Montgomery finds herself in 26th place entering Monday's final day of races before the top 10 move on to Tuesday's Medal Race.
Hailing from Bangkok, Thailand, Montgomery's day started ominously as she was one of seven to be disqualified for starting under a black flag. The DQ, however, was removed from her ledger as competitors' lowest showing is removed from final scoring.
As the day moved to Race 8, Montgomery started fast, coming around the first mark just five seconds behind the leader. She ultimately finished with the sixth-best performance, completing the windward/leeward-two-laps-finish-to-starboard course just 1:46 behind the winner, Maria Erdi of Hungary. Sailors encountered wind speeds between 10-13 knots over the course of the race.
Montgomery, who has continually posted better finishes as the competition has advanced, recording a 23
rd-place finish in Race 4, before coming 21
st (Race 5), 15
th in Race 6 and sixth in Race 8, continues Olympic action on Monday when Race 9 commences at 6:15 a.m. ET. The 10
th and final race will follow shortly after Race 9. Peacock will have all the action live, beginning Monday morning.
